[Yr11 Information Technology] U1O1 for 2020

Dear all,
I am grappling with this issue as well.
We need to use raw data. For the manipulation of this data, students need to use spreadsheet & database functions.
Furthermore, students need to understand when it is best to use either application.
There is so much teaching needed here!

I have experimented with obesity % statistics for all countries. Taken from https://ourworldindata.org/obesity

Importing the csv file into a flat file db was no problem.
The issue arose when trying to create a relational db with an (entity) table for countries which was related to the data.
Over twenty steps & 2 hours later,  I managed to make it work.

Clearly, there are significant challenges in teaching the new study design.

I’m also in the boat that I’m teaching a combined AC/DA class next year. My Year 11s next year may end up getting the normalisation chat – but that’s my class and I’m still in the planning process.

It also depends on where they’re coming in. My Year 11s will be coming in with no database experience whatsoever, yet my Year 12s are in the process of finishing off their U2O3 SAC pretty soon.

Yes, but how much of Databases? There’s nothing on Normal form, just a little on database software. So if student access a database to extract data for their data visualisation, is that enough. Or do I need to cover the functionality of Access.  I’m really trying to find out how much I should be covering for U1O1.
