Another way could be to RPL (recognition of prior learning) any computing
they do in the lower year levels - particularly if it is tailored meeting
the unit of competency requirements. For some advanced students, you could
give them a test or task to do and mark them competent if they
successfully complete it.

The setting of homework is a good
idea - if they pass the task that they do in school, then they could be
marked as competent. The log will serve as proof of nominal hours spent.
Some of the competencies could be also taught / assessed during work
placement as well.
