The new redevelopment at Bendigo Art Gallery will feature a dynamic range of indigenous artworks on display in 1st semester. These include paintings, photography, sculpture and the special exhibition De Anima: Brook Andrew, as part of The Cinemas Project, toured by NETS (National Exhibitions Touring Support), Australia. This is an ideal time to focus on indigenous art, especially in preparation for the introduction of AusVELS Cross Curricular perspectives (students) and in addressing the National Professional Standards for Teachers: Standards 1-2.

This day features a range of presentations and hands-on workshops. Teachers should gain an understanding and experience of how to utilise the exhibitions and artworks with students from Years 7-12.

Presentations:

De Anima: Brook Andrew

Dr Bridget Crone, London based curator and freelance writer and Curator of The Cinema Project will outline the themes behind De Anima in the exhibition space and discuss and issues in curating The Cinemas Project.

Exploring indigenous art in the collection

Helen Attrill, Education Officer at Bendigo Art Gallery will introduce teachers to indigenous artworks on display as part of the gallery's new re-hang including artworks by Gordon Bennett, Michael Cook, Dorothy Napangardi and more.

AusVELS Cross Curricular perspectives for Years 7-10

Kathryn Hendy-Ekers, Arts Manager, Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, will present on the importance of including indigenous contexts into the proposed AusVELS Cross Curricular perspectives.

Incorporating Indigenous art into the curriculum: success stories

Marcus Patching, Arts Coordinator, Bendigo Senior Secondary College will discuss how he used the 2013 exhibition Shadowlife, featuring photo media by indigenous artists to address the unit VCE Art Discussing and Debating Art. Similar strategies can be utilised with the indigenous artworks on display in 2014.
