[Year 12 SofDev] Exam solution 2020

Apologies to friends on the DA list for weaving them into this 2020 VCE discussion.

With the departure of the wonderful Mark Kelly, some of us miss his keen eye, gnashing of teeth, his beating VCEIT heart and razor sharp wit .. although it sometimes seemed to cut rather too painful and deep next to those blessed dog biscuit awards. In my mind’s eye, he is perhaps a happily retired grey nomad, wandering the parks of North to chew over the grammar on the caravan park signage .. perhaps that is my grumpy destiny too when I finish my PhD and turn into a word smith.

Kevork raises a good point about a chance to reflect upon our runup to the 2020 exam and spin yarns about failures, stumbles, wins and victories. For those of us who are more experienced, it is a chance to look closer at how we taught from the new study design. For those who are graduate teachers testing the VCE waters, it is a chance to listen and connect with a winder professional community and subject association to build insight and foresight as they plot a path toward the 2021 exams.

We did this over the water cooler at Keysborough College each year, swapping notes that would inform our courses. It was a frank, open and fearless discussion. I don’t mean holding back a critical reflection about an exam question but opening our minds and ears to better ways of approaching a topic to raise the bar. In fact, we are doing this at VSV tomorrow by analysing the 2020 VCE exam data. The VCAA run some splendid workshops about how to do this. We can also leave details to their pending 2020 examiners report.

Andrew is right, we must not solicit the opinion or comment from those in the VCAA employ who build, calibrate or grade these VCE Exams nor judge those that just quietly watch and listen as they must and can only do. It is enough to salute their valiant labour’s last year by keeping our deliberations and reflections on topic, civil and dignified. Instead of picking holes in the fabric, it must ultimately be about improving student outcomes by our practice of teaching and learning.

Can somebody please consider post a new thread in both the SD and DA list to ask these burning questions:

  1. What do you think was the easiest question and what was the hardest? (Why)
  2. What could you have done better to prepare your students? (How, what worked)
  3. What would you like to see more of, and what gave you pause to think or laugh?
  4. Who ate your cheese left behind in the staff fridge?

I am happy to toss in my 2 cents worth if somebody can kick the first ball.

Regards Roland

Hi Andrew

My suggestion was not to breach any protocols but to have a discussion for any interested teachers of IT past or present purely in the role as teachers.
Where a current SD teacher was also a marker ( a current teacher cannot be an exam writer) and wishes to refrain, that is perfectly appropriate.
I think Mark may have run out of petrol and fair enough as he carried us for too many years.
My hope was for an initial stab eg. Here are my MC answers and concerns.
Or here are the questions I still can't make sense of
As all questions can be independently addressed, any discussion can be ad hoc without anyone posting a compete solution and associated sticking out of his/her neck.

Just my thoughts
Kevork

hi Kevork and fellow listers
VCAA now makes exam markers, writers etc assent to a non-disclosure agreement and a non-public comment about the exam

However someone who worked out their own version of the solutions can say whatever they like and share.
That is where Mark Kelly was such a great contributor

Sadly something has distracted him and his acerbic wit into other pursuits

So, where oh where does the mantle of greatness now fall?
(Certainly not with me)

Is someone brave enough to put their ideas out there?

Hi Roland

Would it not be helpful to have a discussion about the exam online with other teachers ?

I know we had a number of challenging questions last year and it would help others to see where the thinking was with respect to the examiners' intentions.
No pressure, just a hopefully constructive suggestion.

Speak soon

Jasmine, I have invited somebody to get directly in touch with you and share their SD examination ruminations. Thanks for reaching out for help and wishing you all the best for this week.

Dear teachers,

I am a new-ish teachers in Software Development Unit 3&4.

I’ve just got news that I have an inspection scheduled for a written response for one of my students next Monday, I wonder if there is any solutions out there for last year’s paper, please?

No worries if there isn’t, but would be grateful if there is.

Thank you and have a lovely weekend everyone.

Kind regards
