Thanks guys, fair points made by both. I think I'll go with VB for the SAC and "whatever you want as long as it responds to the need" in the SAT.
If I am disadvantaging my students can Paula or someone else up the chain please let me know and I'll go back to uniformity across the board!
Cheers

My feeling is that in the Folio exercises (U3O1) you are specifying the task quite explicitly and that should include prescribing the language being used - if you are unfamiliar with the language then it it could be difficult to assess the accuracy and completeness of the task. On the other hand the SAT is open-ended and the specifications come from the customer. The student would be sensible to explore different languages to add functional or non-functional elements to the solution. Mine are studying PHP but I would be surprised if the better ones didn't include Javascript or SQL in their solution.

This exact question was put at one of the VCAA information session late last year, and the verdict was that for the SAT (not sure about the SAC in U1) it is fine for a student to use a different language from the one being studied, as long as they meet the requirements.

Hi All,
I have a quick query that's never come up in the past few years - I generally teach VB (Yes, I'm a basic programmer!) and I have a student who loves using C#. I have asked him to make both the VB programs in class that we are making as a class and then recreate the same functionality using C#, which he has been doing at home and bringing to me.
My question is are you allowed to still grade (And more importantly, rank) students using different programming languages within the same cohort? As they need to find a solution to their identified need or opportunity in the SAT I'm assuming they may be able to use any language they please? Or will this give some an unfair advantage/disadvantage?
What are people's thoughts (Or the rules even!) governing the use of multiple languages within the one group. Possible or not?
Thanking you in advance for your valued input,
Trav
