Hi,

Here is my reflection;

The physical layer involves sending data. A DOS attack involves the use
of IP, but the attack is to overwhelm the physical layer with masses of
binary transmissions. I believe that this is where the link exist. The
attack starts at the physical layer but uses data link and the network
layer to do its nasty work.

Sorry for the delay ... busy teaching the OSI model in Cisco ....
The KK : purposes and functions of the physical layer (Layer 1) of the

 is still unclear to me. The OSI physical (layer 1) layer's relationship
with the TCP/IP protocol model ( read as Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol Protocol )  is as much a mystery to me as it
seems to be to everyone else.

 In Cisco CCNA we do mostly the OSI model and only a little of the
TCP/IP model. I have found your references to the lowest layer of the
TCP/IP model (network access ) only handling layer 2 equivalent of the
OSI which would only deepen the mystery (see

) 

  I am wondering if the word model at the end of the KK statement had a
different purpose than the 4 layer TCP/IP model. Perhaps the intention
was to relate the physical layer of the OSI to the role of TCP ( layer 4
) and IP ( layer 3 ) layers still within the OSI model. Even then, I am
not sure there is a relationship between layer 1 and layers 3 and 4. The
layered model allows development and accelerates evolution, as the
fabulous slide show by John Bellavance outlines. Mark's slide show is
also very helpful in understanding the layers.
 
So, all in all I am in the same boat as you Russell.

Having read around a bit, I was under the impression that the TCP/IP did
not address the physical layer (as in pulse shaping, line voltages etc)
at all, and that it assumed the physical infrastructure was in place
ready to do the bidding of the TCP/IP protocol. My understanding is that
the TCP/IP ends at the Data link MAC protocols - or am I up the creek.  

As usual, the VCAA has left it up the teaching staff to define the
course by consensus.

I assume Kevork has a definitive view????

For quite some time now I've been avoiding this KK because I'd rather
clean a dead dog's ears than spend time on the OSI.

But in the end I had to find the cotton buds and get stuck in, and I
think I have a reasonable overview of the OSI and how TCP/IP maps to it.
(even produced a draft slideshow

But the second part of KK04 really has me baffled: *the relationship of
the physical layer to the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet
Protocol model.

I know that TCP/IP's Network interface layer maps to OSI's physical
layer (and the data link layer), but for the life of me I can't see how
it's any more significant than any of OSI's or TCP/IP's other layers.

Can someone suggest why the relationship between the OSI physical layer
and TCP/IP is so significant?
Has this relationship been in the papers?  Has this physical
relationship resulted in offspring?
Is Mr OSI going to be on Oprah... or the Jerry Springer show?
