What's new in Linux - By the Linux's "Guy Smiley", Lev Lafayette.

Inkscape and Open Source graphics by Andy Fitzsimon

Andy Fitzsimon will be talking about Inkscape, Open graphics formats,
typography and practical use of open source design tools today.

Red Hat's Andrew Fitzsimon is an Inkscape developer, participant in Scribus
development and most notably a passionate open source graphics user.
Following a background in animation, Andrew is currently involved in
technical Illustration, desktop, web, and publishing design for print.
Andrew
has presented technical talks about free graphics software at Australia's
linux.conf.au for the past two years as well as the Libre Graphics Meeting
held in Montreal, Canada and Lyon, France the year before that.

KDE Development by Ian Wadam

Our speaker, Ian Wadham, is a developer in the KDE Desktop project, working
in
the KDE Games module on a game called KGoldrunner.

He will talk about what KDE is, as a bundle of software and as a project,
and
how you can become a KDE developer. The project involves hundreds of people,
from all over the world, who hardly ever meet face to face ... and there are
no managers. So how does it function and what holds it together?
Ian will go on to talk about current development work on KDE 4.0, which is
due
for release in late October and is now in its alpha phases. Hopefully he
will
have some screenshots to show, but it is all changing very rapidly at
present.

Finally he will talk about his own work in KDE Games and the push to improve
the graphics of all games and make them both resizeable and themeable. So
there should be some interesting "before" and "after" screenshots.
Ian is not a very big wheel in the KDE environment, but he has a lot of fun
anyway. He used to be a UNIX, C and Ingres guru at the Vic Gov Office of
Housing, but is now a self-funded retiree and finds he has become a Linux
and
Windows illiterate ... :-)

He started as a programmer in 1964, working on device drivers, operating
systems and real-time systems, such as the TAB's original on-line systems.
In
the 70's he held senior positions at two academic computer centres and
became
Technical Director of the Computer Power Group. From 1980 to 1998 he was an
independent consultant and contractor, working with several government
bodies.

Future Talks

We are always in need of talks, particularly when schedules change and a
speaker is suddenly unable to make an arranged talk. If you have something
Linux related that you want to present a talk about, whether it be for this
coming meeting or future meetings, contact luv-ctte at luv.asn.au with the
details.

Folks, a LUG's worth is directly proportional to the efforts of it's
members.
Stand up and get active. Now.

THIS MEANS YOU!
