Vacuum forming

Hi Andrew

We set up our own simple and basic unit which is basically just a sealed box with a top that has hundreds of holes in it and a large hole on the side for the vacuum hose. The frame is 2 open squares joined together with bolts and wing nuts and is ever so slightly bigger than the box so it slips neatly over the top. The frame clamps a 300 x 300mm sheet of 3mm acrylic or 1mm HDPS (high density poly styrene) sheet. The frame had to be small enough to fit in a conventional oven. We also have 150x150 one we made to reduce the material waste. Place the object to be formed on the top over the holes, turn on the vacuum, place the heated material on the top and viola, vacuum forming.

I said it was basic and simple and so it is fairly limited in application. The acrylic doesn’t bend very tightly so it’s limited but we’ve found the HDPS to work better but it won’t stretch too far without becoming holey. I’m sure there is better material out there that we haven’t tried yet. We’ve successfully used it for some lamp shades, marble run channels and so on.

Cost was zero as we just used some chipboard we had lying around.

Looking forward to hearing of other cheap and effective solutions

Specifically: supervision, direct instruction on machinery, and observation of folio work on both parties was naturally compromised, and as we do not hold a technician to the DT space who is qualified to supervise in this capacity, hard to know how to move forward to improve same.
