Industry Panel on Fashion IP with AFC & POF
*Australian Fashion Council (AFC) and Phillips Ormonde Fitzpatrick (POF)
invite you to join us for an Industry Panel and Networking session on
Thursday, 21 November in Melbourne.*

Facilitated by *AFC’s CEO David Giles-Kaye*, we’ll be delving into the
topic of 'copy cats' in the Fashion Industry.

To tackle this, we'll be joined by speakers from iconic fashion brands
including; *Sai-Wai Foo – HR & Grants Manager at Toni Maticevski*, and *David
Annals – Brand Protection Manager at Nike Pacific. POF Partner, Adrian
Crooks* will also be there to provide Intellectual Property Law expertise.

*The key areas we will cover include:*
- Challenges faced by designers with copycats
- How successful brands combat knockoffs
- How the legal system can be used to protect designers
- Where the gaps are...

We will then open the floor to the audience for some Q&A. The panel will be
followed by networking drinks and the opportunity to meet with the
panellists and fellow industry members.

*David Annals | Brand Protection Manager, Nike Pacific*
Dave’s background is in consumer rights having started out at New Zealand’s
Commerce Commission before moving into Trust and Safety roles at Trade Me
(NZ’s version of eBay). Working with various stakeholders including brands
such as Nike, Dave gained insights into the world of brand protection.
Now the Brand Protection Manager for Nike Australia, Dave has been in their
BP team for over 8 years and has seen it all! Increasingly focused on the
digital side he believes the internet will only continue to provide
opportunities and challenges in a global economy.
*Adrian Crooks | Partner, Phillips Ormonde Fitzpatrick*
Adrian is an intellectual property (IP) lawyer who combines legal expertise
with deep technological knowledge to advise Australian and international
businesses in the resolution of commercial IP disputes.
Adrian represents clients in a range of infringement matters, including
registered design rights, trade marks and copyright. He has over 10 years’
experience providing infringement and validity advice across all aspects of
IP.
Adrian qualified as a patent attorney in 2005, and was awarded the
Institute of Patent and Trade Mark Attorney’s prize that year for best
qualifying candidate.
*David Giles-Kaye | CEO, Australian Fashion Council*
David is currently CEO of the Australian Fashion Council - AFC, where he
formerly spent several years on the board of directors. He was recently
involved with smart textiles technology company, Imagine Intelligent
Materials, which is at the forefront of developing the future of wearables.
His primary background lies in technology and business development in
sports apparel with a number of companies including WL Gore (Gore-Tex).
David has had the experience of starting his own sports fashion label, and
also in performance apparel and equipment for defence.
*Sai-Wai Foo | HR & Operations Manager, Toni Maticevski*
With over 20 years’ experience in the fashion industry across, trend
forecasting, design, product development, marketing sectors.
Sai-Wai is the HR & Operations Manager at Maticevski a Melbourne based
fashion brand established in 1999 by Toni Maticevski.
In addition, she is a Fashion educator in the Bachelor of Fashion Design
(Honours), RMIT University and a creative practitioner in the visual arts.
