Dear colleagues
In February ACARA released its draft curriculum called Digital Technologies (DT) for consultation. The curriculum sits within the Technologies Learning Area. It is one of two subjects in this learning area, with the other being Design and Technologies. Digital Technologies is in addition to ICT as a general capability, so we will have within AusVELS a curriculum that focuses on computational thinking/digital systems. While there is an obvious overlap in some knowledge and skills contained within the general capability DT has a strong focus on algorithmic and systems thinking, as well as a focus on using digital systems to create purpose-designed solutions. There is also a focus on creating and collaborating online. In primary schools, the content in this curriculum is quite new for many teachers - some are already doing great programming work with their students - Scratch, gamemaker etc. The same situation also applies in many secondary schools where there is no 'dedicated' curriculum to IT/digital technologies. Within VELS we only have the interdisciplinary domain of ICT. It's been up to schools as to whether they offer something more specialised, however with AusVELS from 2015 DT will be a mandated component of school programs up to year 8, and possibly to year 10 (this is still being decided by the VCAA).
So, this is new and exciting. The draft curriculum is on the Australian Curriculum website - consultations close tomorrow (curriculum attached). However, if you miss the deadline you can still provide feedback directly to me as I have quite a bit to do with the development of this national curriculum.
On another matter, as with all curriculum implemented in Victoria, schools have the flexibility to mix and match different curriculum as they like to form their school programs. This means that schools can offer units that are a mixture of different curriculum such as Design and Technologies and Digital Technologies.
Please do not hesitate to contact directly if you have any further queries.
Regards
Paula
