Autodesk (makers of Max) also have a Personal Learning Edition of Maya, which is also use in game design, and far more so in movies than Max. There used to be a cut down version of Max called gmax which was designed specifically for game character creation, but that has done as well. The biggest issue with Max and Maya is their sheer complexity. Unless you are an expert with them, and have a lot of time to teach even the basics, you may struggle to get much of value from them.
You can get Maya PLE here : http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=7639525
You can download some free, professional training videos here : http://www.3dbuzz.com (you will have to join up, but it is free)

Hi Caterina
For gamemaking - Use Game Maker http://www.yoyogames.com/make free
download, tutorials etc Lots of have been using it for a number of
years. I can personally recommend it. Kids love it.
For 3D - try Google SketchUp http://sketchup.google.com/ also free. On
the bottom right hand side of this link is information about using it
for education and also links to tutorials. Kids also really enjoy this
too. And you can challenge them to put 3D images of your school
buildings onto google maps too!
I find it very hard to justify paying for site licenses for software
when there are such excellent free resources. Save your money for new
hardware :-)
Good luck with whatever you choose, let us know how you go.
By the way we have a policy here to identify yourself in terms of
position and school, I presume you are from Sacred Heart in Oakleigh?
Cheers
Ros
