[Yr11 Information Technology] Developing SAC's

Hi Margaret,

Would you like to share some ideas how to make it "fun" for students?

Students in my class have fun by working on tutorials and having discussions
on topics of interests.

I would like students to take the SAC seriously as if they are in year 12.
They are also assessed similarly to year 12 standards.

Every subject in year 12 is stressful and challenging for the students so if
teachers give them a taste of what's to come (during year 11), they will
likely choose the right subjects based on their strengths and interests.
Perhaps not all teachers would agree with me on this point but when I look
into the eyes of my students, that's what I see.

Cheers,

Dinh Tran

I would think that at Year 11, you would want to develop a SAC that would a)
assess their understanding of the key knowledge and skills and b) appeal to
their interests. After all, we want these kids to enroll in our Year 12
subjects come July.

Over the years I have used students co-curricular interests to direct me as
to what type of case study might be appropriate for their interest. And of
course it is important to have FUN with the Year 11 curriculum. At Year 12
you don't have as much flexibility compared with Year 11.

The example in the study design is for Enrollment trends at a school. This
might be interesting to some, but other case studies might be more appealing
to the kids. So you might need to do a little thinking outside the box!
Perhaps we could use the list to brainstorm?

Hi Mark,

I do not agree with you or Natalie about the possibility of students having
any real advantages because firstly the examples in the Study Design are
INCOMPLETE and only a sample, not the full SAC. It has great potentials to
be developed into a real SAC, using different data sets and even different
scenarios so I believe writing SAC's based on the study design should be a
good thing because at least it's on the right track.

If a student goes through the trouble of reading and comprehending the study
design and masters the skills that is required in the SAC's, then they
deserve to do well. I have never heard of any student capable of achieving
that standard.

No Natalie, please come back from under the basalt. All contributions are
valued here.

You do have a good point when it comes to kids getting real SACs and getting
an unfair advantage, which is why the ITA list is careful about teachers
uploading SACs to the public. You never know where they might end up.

Keep on posting!

Mark

Hi Natalie. If a year 11 of mine went to the trouble of reading the study
design and independently worked on a possible solution before a SAC was even
given, I reckon they'd deserve bonus points, but such a rare beast probably
wouldn't be the type who needed bonus points! They would already be A+
material.

:-)

Hi,

I'd be reluctant to base an assessment task on something that's in a public
document. I actively encourage all senior students to read the study
design... I'm not convinced year 11s would go to the trouble, but you never
know. I know these examples are starting points, but I wouldn't want some
students having even a perceived advantage... I don't think it's worth the
risk.

Hi,

Can anyone be kind enough to share some sample SAC's please?
Nelson Cengage have not yet set up the teacher's resources login for me so i
am a bit stuck on ideas.

Are we allowed to use the detailed example of the learning activities on
page 55-56 of the Study Design and create a SAC out of it?

I would like to personally thank you for your support as i am a recent
graduate teacher.

Kind Regards,
Dinh Tran
