[Yr11 Information Technology] Learn PHP and MySQL to make useful websites and support your students

Hi everyone,

I am trying not to be reactive - and I do want to listen to your concerns
but feel I must make a few points.

Firstly, we are not comparing apples with apples. The PD that you are all
discussing is 5 x 2 hour sessions + a site licence resource as well. We are
not talking about a single PD session. So the cost really is $120 per
session + a site licence resource that is valued at $324.50 on its own.

The presenter (in this case - Kevork), deserves to be paid for his time and
effort - of this I am sure you would all agree. VITTA needs to pay for the
venue as well as someone to organize the event itself - registration, etc.
At the end of the day - VITTA does not make much money from PD - and in fact
last financial year lost money. Under these circumstances, perhaps VITTA
should offer NO PD AT ALL. We offer PD for what we consider to be a fair
price - enough to make the event viable. In actual fact, the monies set
aside by schools for PD are out of line with reality - and that is the
issue.

Hi everyone

While I appreciate that these things all cost to some degree - and by
complaining we're probably shooting the messenger - I can't help but think
that the truth lies somewhere in all the messages about the affordability of
PD.

In a year when many if not most schools are finding the financial going
tough, when there is basically little if any money for things other than
'vital', who seriously can afford these costs?

I don't question the actual cost/value because I have no knowledge of their
complexity, but maybe the PD and the clientele are not matched anymore.

To be truthful - it wouldn't matter how great the PD was - even if there was
a chance I would return as an all knowing, worldbeating ICT genius - we
don't have the money to spend.

It is 100% certainty that most schools around my area would be loathe to and
unable to spend $600 on 1 person for a PD day. As Leanne says - the
discounted price is way outside our league.

We are feeling guilty if we spend $55 for a Saturday morning PD where it
doesn't cost the school anything in terms of replacements etc. We wouldn't
even ask to attend a VITTA PD as the money is just not available.

I'm interested to hear from ppl who are able to attend and how this sort of
$ fits into the budget. Maybe there is a lesson to be learned from that
angle.

And - maybe those of us who have decided it's an absurd amount of money
should be taking our thoughts to VITTA directly.

Couldn't agree more. It seems in recent years VITTA has priced many of its
activities beyond the reach of all but the wealthier schools. Not much point
in a membership discount when prices are so high. Leanne Wright - Epping SC.

Where can I buy a copy of Kevork's book?

I think $600 is a little steep for this workshop, there's no way my college
can allocate that much for PD. Is VITTA a business or a professional
association? I think the PD industry needs to be more closely scrutinized.
