hehehe you beat me to it Claire...
I was just looking for the NTIS site when I checked back in my mail :)

The training package can be daunting when you first get it, it can be difficult to decipher what it all means at times. I have downloaded the whole thing from the NTIS site, which makes it easier to do copy and pastes of just the stuff that is relevant to our units, as there are many we don't need in there as well.

Geraldine, when you look through the package you get the overview of each course, and then in a different section (which is when the hyperlinked site makes life easier) you get the assessment details - the performance criteria is what needs to be covered to show competence in that unit.
I generally break those up into what tasks need to be completed to enable the students to develop the skills and then the competence.
With all of the new ones.... I am looking forward to creating something interesting :)
We cover the work placement by trying to set the course up as a workplace. This new package opens up other fields where it may be more easy to find placements....

Claire.. I have only been skimming... rushing around charging batteries and getting stuff ready for tomorrow..., and not looked too deeply into it yet, but has anything been said about an exam? or will it be like most of the other VCE VET studies - no exam, and an enter score generated from their other subjects?

cheers
Suz

Hi Geraldine,
The Units of Competency should all be available on the National Training website.
Not all are available thru the search engine, but they are there as part of the downloadable training package.

For example the Unit BSBCRT101A: Apply critical thinking techniques
can be found at
http://www.ntis.gov.au/?/trainingpackage/BSB07/unit/BSBCRT101A

CUFDIG302A: Author interactive sequences
can be found at
http://www.ntis.gov.au/Default.aspx?/trainingpackage/CUF07/unit/CUFDIG302A

CUFRES201A: Collect and organise content for broadcast or publication
http://www.ntis.gov.au/Default.aspx?/trainingpackage/CUF07/unit/CUFRES201A
and so on...
However, if you have purchased the training package, I would have thought the info should be in that document?

Work placement is strongly encouraged but not mandated because it is very difficult to obtain in the Multimedia industry.

Package a while ago but it does not have the details of content for each
unit. Could someone please advise as to where to purchase the complete
package? Also is work placement usually a requirement for the CERT 2 or 3?

all we would have to do is add a few extra UOC into the year 11 course to

Its worth looking at for those who dont want to drop the cert 2.
Im not sure yet. I like the idea of taking my time and doing the cert 3 in 2
years, however im sure my school will put in their 2 cents.

Hi everyone,

My apologies if this covers the same ground as other people's posts, or
if I'm totally off the mark with my thinking here, however it seems to
me that we could offer a complete Cert II at year 11 and a complete Cert
III at year 12 if we structure them as follows. Of course, they are 65
nominal hours over the amount that they should be, which may be
completely unacceptable considering this is VET in VCE.

Cert II:
CORE UNITS (75 hours)
Apply critical thinking techniques
Develop and apply creative arts industry knowledge
Participate in OHS processes
Work effectively with others

ADDITIONAL CORE UNITS (40 hours)
Work effectively in the screen and media industries
Produce and prepare photo images

SPECIALIST UNITS (50 hours)
Maintain interactive content
Collect and organize content for broadcast or publication

ELECTIVE UNITS (80 hours)
Develop and extend critical and creative thinking skills
Follow a design process

Subtotal: 245 hours

CERT III:
CORE UNITS
Develop and extend critical and creative thinking skills (already
covered)
Work effectively in the screen and media industries (already covered)
Participate in OHS processes (already covered)
Produce and prepare photo images (already covered)

ELECTIVE UNITS
Maintain interactive content (already covered)
Collect for broadcast or publication (already covered)
Follow a design process (already covered)

VCE VET Units 3 and 4 UNITS
Create 2D digital animations
Write content for a range of media
Explore and apply the creative design process to 2D forms
Author interactive sequences
Prepare video assets
Create visual design components

Subtotal: 225

Total number of hours 470

Hi Suz,

Not wishing to steal your thunder, but I've had wikis running for quite
some time at Edulists from the home page if it is any help.

Take Care

I would be more than happy to set up a wiki....
With falling numbers I have been a bit quite here of late... but ummm
being one of the "arty" ones I am quite reinspired to get this thing
working well...
I won't be offering it next year, as our course selection is already
finished, and subjects have been allocated etc. but looking forward to
jumping back in in 2010

I know Kevork has a great set up with the edulist thing, but I love the
interaction of the wiki, and will be setting one up regardless, even if
just for my own personal course development
Just set one up...
http://vetidm.wikispaces.com/
nothing on it yet, will play later...
I have set it up that you need to join the group,
Hope this helps :)

Hi Andrew,

I think that the idea of establishing a common repository, both for
ideas and finished products/assignments is great. I'm creating for an
Online course, but would be happy to share some resources. I have been
using resources provided by this group this year, and have found them
invaluable in keeping the course up-to-date. It should also help us with
our validation, since it provides peer feedback on our work that those
of us who are working on our own would otherwise not have access to.

There is also the issue that all of the industry representatives on the
panel were of the opinion that a cert 2 was no use in getting a job in
the industry. The cert 3 is the minimum to actually be employed in
interactive media and people with only a cert 3 were not actually going
to be allowed in most cases to touch scripting in a work environment so
it might be more sensible to only have it appear in cert 4.

There is a great opportunity to make the course exciting while still
staying within the confines of the course - especially for the more
"arty" amongst us. The IT people (such as me) will need some more
support to be "arty" but the students should (I hope) stress less over
this course.

Anyone who worries about partial completion: if they drop off after
year 11 / unit 1,2 then change their mind a year later any TAFE should
give them RPL for what they have already done - especially if the TAFE
is their RTO

Any student who has chosen it already for next year is taking our
enthusiasm on faith and believes that we can produce a course that will
be good. So let's do it.

Btw: is there anyone who is prepared to set up a common moodle / wiki
for all to access and share on?
That could be the best way around the issue of resources and sharing and
we could treat it as common ground.

Because it was not possible to complete the new Cert 3 in one year,
there was a dilemma, ie that students finish Units 1-4 with only a Cert
2 and partial Cert 3.
I think industry, tertiary institutions and most teachers would agree it
is better to come out of VCE with a completed Cert 3. Doing Cert 2 and 3
really requires 3 years so some schools may offer the Cert 2 at year 10
and then go onto Cert 3 at year 11 and 12.

To me, it depends on your perspective and how you're selling it to the
kids. For my students, having a certificate at the end of year 11 if
they wish to do the 1/2 sequence is a drawcard and has increased
enrolment. Year 10s especially don't want to necessarily commit to a

2

year course until they get a chance to see what it is like, but also
perceive partial-completions as being less than desirable.

Hi Ana,

I can see too, but now I have a headache.

Does it mean that we have to provide both Yr 11 pathways so that those
who chose to finish at Yr 11 have a "certificate". It seems if we just
offer the Cert III in Media those that drop out at Yr 11 will only

have

a partial completion of Cert III in Media. Will this be any better or
worse than a completed Cert II in Creative Industries ( Media )? Does
the VCAA require that we offer both Certificates or is it optional?

Also, without seeing the details, it looks like it might be possible

to

maintain some scripting under the Author Interactive Sequences UOC.

I suppose when we hear more details, including what will be examined,
the way to proceed will become clearer.

Yahh,
I can see, i know, i can prepare.

First, we have to start calling it "VCE VET Interactive Digital Media"
NOT Cert 3 in media.
Next, why bother with cert 2?
Third, if copywrite is an elective, do we have to teach it for the

year

12 exam?
Fourth, for those who want it, there is 3D (i have to say I'm not

going

to do it though, its not in the year 12 course).
Fifth, we now have Video in year 12, AHHHHHHHHH
Sixth, I'm assuming that they want us to teach Web, in Author
interactive sequences.
Seven, NO SCRIPTING!

>From my perspective, I am just going to use Unit 1 & 2 to teach all

the

software and concepts that they need in Unit 3 & 4 and just adapt the
units to fit.

For example i might use "Produce drawings to represent and communicate
the concept" to do a comic with storyboard, using flash with buttons

and

a little animation (to prepare for 2d animation)

"Maintain interactive content" would be an introduction to "Author
interactive sequences"

And the Compulsory units, you could do anything. Just work in the
requirements with any kind of practical task.

I'm OK with it all. It looks VERY flexible.

:) Ana

The revised VCE VET Interactive Digital Media (IDM) program has now
successfully progressed though all the required internal committees

and

processes at the VCAA.
Attached is a PDF extract from the soon to be published VCE VET IDM
program booklet. This extract has "gone live" on the VCAA website

today.

VCAA have made available an extract for both the revised Business and
Multimedia programs because they were fielding a large number of calls
and
emails about the programs for next year.

The complete hard copy of the program booklet will be distributed to
schools early in Term IV.

Let the discussions begin!!
