Under the Australian Quality Training Framework (ATQF) regulations and
the Training packages developed by the National Training Information
Service <http://www.ntis.gov.au/>
(NTIS) work placements are an integral requirement that must be done.
Remember VET is a stream that is structured towards a work qualification
recognised nationally. It is a subject that essentially managed by the
Australian Government through the Department of Education, Science and
Training (DEST).
Here is a summary of what is said in the training package:
A pre-requisite of the training package is that a student studying the
Certificate II must complete a minimum of 10 days work placement in a
suitable workplace whereas those students studying for a Certificate III
are required to complete a minimum of 20 days to receive the certificate
over 2 years.
Remember work placement is not work experience. The students are
employed by the organisation for the period they are working - in fact
they can include this in their employment history on their resumes. This
is completely different to work experience some students do in lower
years.
At my school most of the VET students are VCAL students and we
incorporate the work skills unit of VCAL with this.
Finding it hared to find work?
There are numerous options speak to your Local Community Partnership
(there is one in the northern suburbs), your careers person and even
your RTO should be of assistance. Remember your RTO has to ensure that
you meet the training package requirements and it is in their best
interest to ensure the course you have structured meets these as well
as the work placement requirements (hence evidence gathering including
logged work placements) as they will be audited under the new training
package requirements
