[vet-it] New VET IT course

Thanks Kevork

This was my thinking, that if students are able to RPL some of the Unit 1/2
units, then there may be enough time for them to complete the extra units
required to complete the full qualification and thus gain maximum benefit
from the course.

Naturally it will be up to each school to negotiate with their RTO to enrol
them in the extra units required as this would be separate to the VASS
enrolment, but for the sake of an extra 1 or 2 units, I think it is worth
offering to students.

It may also be the case that schools can offer some of the IT units as
electives at Year 10, for example, and increase the time that way, although
this will obviously cause hassles for students picking up the course for the
first time at Year 11.

Kind regards

Subject: Re: [vet-it] New VET IT course

Hi Allan and VET IT colleagues ,

Firstly the program booklet for the new VET course is on the VCAA web
site as announced earlier on this list.

The Cert II has 8 core and 6 elective units ( 310 - 340 hrs ). The first
year of the Cert III ( partial ) has only the 8 core from the Cert II ( 220
hrs ) . ( In both cases there is a pre-req of ICAU1128A Operate a Personal
computer. ) So, I gather a student could do Cert II and then do Cert III (
partial )except for the fact they would have done 6 extra elective modules
in their effort to complete Cert II. That is why p 4 describes the Cert III
( partial ) as comprising the CORE of Cert II plus specific electives from
the Cert III course.

The only change in this new course is that students can only receive a
PARTIAL completion of Cert III. To get a FULL completion of Cert III
students need to do :
           . 6 core
. 4 OR 6 OR 5 specialist units depending on the stream chosen (
Applications, Network Administration , Support respectively )
 AND . 4 elective units

Looking at the VET program booklet , of the Cert III requirement, Units 1
- 4 of the course covers:
            . 6 core
. 2 OR 4 OR 4 of the specialist units in the streams in the
order listed in the booklet ( Applications, Network Administration , Support
respectively )
. 8 of the Cert II core which would not be at a high enough
standard for the 4 Electives required for Cert III listed above

So, to get a student to make up the shortfall between VET units 1 - 4
at school and the FULL Cert III would require another :
. 2 OR 2 OR 1 of the specialist units in the streams in the
order listed in the booklet ( Applications, Network Administration ,
Support respectively )
AND . 4 electives from the list of electives permitted as listed in
the Training package.

I calculate that to be in the vicinity of 200 hours in round figures.
It is for this reason I believe ( the large shorfall , equating to about
another year of work that the VCAA could not impose on students and schools
) that the decision was made to settle for a PARTIAL completion of Cert III
in VET Units 1 - 4. A pity as it was a selling point for our students ( Get
VCE units , scored assessment and a FULL Cert III nationally recognised for
your 2 years of VET IT ).

So, now that I have confused everybody completely, I think it would be
useful to put in the RPL section to allow students to demonstrate competence
in the units studied in previous years.

If I have made any wrong assumptions or claims here, please feel free
to correct me .

Keep well

Hi everyone

After having a good look through the new VET IT program guide I am
interested in feedback from people. It seems to me that it is a much better
structure than the last set up.

The way I read it is that students who complete the Certificate II in IT
will actually get full credit for the first year of the Cert III in IT
course, so essentially students can attempt the Certificate II in IT,
complete it, and then enrol into the second year of the Certificate III in
IT course and select the appropriate stream that they want to complete.

Is this how people read it?

I am currently editing and re-writing the Cert II and Cert III VET IT books,
and am also wondering if people think it will be of use if I add in an RPL
section into the front of the Cert III IT book for students that have
completed either part of the Cert II IT course, or have completed IT
elective units at a Year 10 level and are wanting to receive credit for work
already completed. As with any assessments made by the teacher, though, it
would have to be done by someone with the relevant BSZ or TAA Certificate IV
in Training and Assessment qualifications.

I'd be interested in people's thoughts on any of this.
