** Welcome from the President
------------------------------------------------------------

It was fantastic to see so many of you at our recent AGM event at Swinburne University's Advanced Manufacturing and Design Centre (https://www.swinburne.edu.au/research/strengths-achievements/specialist-facilities/advanced-manufacturing-and-design-centre/) . It was a great night with the highlights being a tour of the Factory of the Future and a very insightful and informative presentation from the Dean of the School of Design, Professor Scott Thompson-Whiteside. The wine was nice too!

I’d like to share with you some of the information and statistics that we learned at the event. Design was defined as “A human-centered problem solving process” and that Designers “translate needs into tangible products, services, environments and experiences”. As our learning area can often suffer from some poor perception issues it is always useful to have definitions that capture the range and context of our activities.

In Victoria the design industry is very strong. More than 75,000 people are employed as designers here and Victoria is home to more than 4,000 design consultancies, most of which are energetic small businesses employing less than five people. Design consultancies contribute more than AU$4.8 billion to Victoria's economy and the total employment associated with design in Victoria is estimated to be about 200,000.

The new Victorian Curriculum F-10 is here! TheVictorian Curriculum F–10 (http://victoriancurriculum.vcaa.vic.edu.au) sets out a single, coherent and comprehensive set of content descriptions and associated achievement standards to enable teachers to plan, monitor, assess and report on the learning achievement of every student.
The Victorian Curriculum F–10 incorporates and reflects much of the Australian Curriculum F–10, but differs in some important respects, most notably the representation of the curriculum as a continuum of learning and the structural design. Victorian priorities and standards are reflected in the new curriculum.
Victorian government and Catholic schools are required to use the Victorian Curriculum F–10 at the start of 2017. Independent schools may use the Victorian Curriculum F–10 as a model and resource for the effective implementation of the Australian Curriculum. In 2016, schools can also use the curriculum for planning and preparation. Further information about the new Victorian Curriculum will provided at the DATTA Vic Hands On conference in December as well as throughout 2016.

Skill Sharing

a New DATTA Vic Initiative

DATTA Vic is committed to supporting our members - wherever they are in Victoria. In order to ensure that rural and regional teachers have better access to professional learning, we hope to run a new program next year called Skill Sharing. We are looking for educators to register with us if they have a workshop they are willing to run in their local area.

DATTA Vic will publish the list of these workshops, and schools can register for sessions in their local area. All Skill Sharing participants will receive a certificate of participation.

There will be a nominal charge for participants, and presenters will be paid. We can also cover certain materials costs.

If you have an idea for a workshop you could run for your fellow teachers, please complete the application form ** HERE (http://www.datta.vic.edu.au/content/skill-sharing-workshop-registration-form#overlay-context=content/skill-sharing-workshop-registration-form)

In Memoriam - Sally Johnson

The teaching community is mourning the passing of Sally Johnson. Sally made a difference to people. She went through the B Ed. Art and Craft course at Melbourne State College and majored in Wood.

She was at MLC for 25 years and taught Product Design - wood. She was a positive role model to the girls at MLC and they always aimed high as a result. On a number of occasions her students were in Top Designs. In 2014 Top Designs one of her students made an amazing skirt out of wood as well as a clutch purse and a necklace. Sally was always an innovative creative thinker who would have said to her students "Sure, let's have a go at that"

Sally was the assistant Chief Assessor and was so supportive and understanding during exam marking when the inevitable happened and the marker was out of range. Ringing Sally up wasn't traumatising.

She died as a result of a brain tumour which is a little known cancer that robs us of so many brilliant people.
