G'day Paul. At St.Pats we have two of these machines. An MDX20 and an MDX40R. We originally purchased the MDX20 because we needed to be able to manufacture PCB's. It works very well for this when used with PCB Design and Make which came with the package from our supplier, Intellecta.
This package cost around $4000.00 which, when compared to the construction cost of a booth built to the safety standards required for the handling of acids used in PCB etching, was very reasonable.
However, since then I have found that when used in conjunction with Pro Desktop and Pro Engineer it is also possible to manufacture small parts and panels for various mechatronic and robotics projects. This led to the addition of the larger machine.
The next step for us is to acquire some kind of vacuum former or mould making package to be able to extend the use of the machines to full blown 3D CAD CAM.
For information on the mills Tony Pugatschew of Intellecta is very good. Here is his Web address.

Hope this helps
Best regards .... Roger

Subject: [Systems Engineering Teachers' Mailing List] Roland Mills
We are looking at purchasing a Roland Mill and would like to hear from anyone who has one or used one.
We would specifically be interested in the software you use and how easy/ hard it is to use and any
other advice you could offer. We would like to be able to use it across years 7-12, if that's possible, and would be interested in the types of projects that you do with your students.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
