[Year 12 SofDev] Enrolment Nnumbers

Whilst I am still a new teacher, and first year in SD and none in Informatics, I have a few decades in industry so thought I would share that perspective.  It has been raised that career paths need to be relevant to encourage students to sign up.  My thoughts on reviewing the new study design is that the Data Analytics subject next year is fairly well aligned to a much in demand and well compensated career path.  It's just less known than the more standard Software Development with programming at its core.

I ran Business Intelligence and Analytics departments at multinational companies for close to a decade and we often struggled to recruit capable staff.  Mostly we hired expat English/Continental European candidates in order to get the right quality and they were in big demand.  Anyone with combinations of business knowledge, data analysis, transformation and modelling, and visualisation was highly valued.  One advantage of having these skills is that you can work not only in IT departments in big companies but directly for and in a business unit, where the ability to create systems that enable business staff to generate insights from their data, quickly and accurately is critical.

These staff earned big dollars, usually more than programmers, both in contract ($1000-1300/day) and permanent ($100-150K).  With the growth of big data the need for analysts is increasing rapidly and offers a growing area of employment with new specialisations like Data Scientist highly valued.

The other big growth area in industry is around information management, including security.  Most big companies now have a Head of Data, often residing in the C-Suite, whose function is both operational and strategic with regard to managing and securing information and leveraging it to drive business improvement.  The inclusion of this in the Data Analytics course is appropriate.

So it seems like the curriculum is on the right track (and can continue to improve, possibly with more emphasis on generating insights as against communicating them) to provide suitable options for career paths.  The emphasis on innovation, visualisations and information security alongside the more traditional development seems to be well targeted.  Maybe we need to sell the career options more fully to students throughout the middle and senior years to increase interest.

Has anyone surveyed their VCE students about their reasons for selecting or rejecting IT subjects?

That might give us a clue.
