[Year 12 SofDev] Computer Lab question

Hi Troy

Try to push back as hard as you can against getting rid of labs, some additional arguments

  * Laptops and ipads are good devices to use applications that other people have created, they are not a professional platform for actually creating ICT products or apps.
  * Professionals in IT use desktop computers to create sophisticated products, like apps, film, songs and websites.
  * The demands of VCE IT subjects and many visual design subjects logically demand higher end machines, with lots of screen space. Try editing a film and managing the soundtrack on laptop.
  * I couldn't imagine trying to run a gaming class at 9 or 10 using laptops.
  * We need to have an environment where students can breakdown problems, design a solution, develop a solution and evaluate, laptops could be fine for junior years but as the demands of the curriculum increase so does the requirement for more processing power and screen space.
  * A whole school laptop program is a big win for ICT/eLearning in a school and should advance learning in most subjects. But if there aren't enough labs to support computing, audio technology, VCE visual art / media subjects then the outcomes for those students will probably be limited and why would any school do that?

Anyway these are just my personal opinions informed by teaching kids in all sorts of environments for 10 years. I was going to suggest getting your boss to try and edit a film or a large Photoshop file on a laptop with a small screen with a Wifi connection but I won't so don't do it.

Cheers

Subject: Re: [Year 12 SofDev] Computer Lab question

Good questions to ask:

  * Will your school cover the cost of Adobe Software and other expensive specialised software available for download on to individual machines?
  * Will the students have machines with the grunt required to run the required software?
  * How do you run a class with a range of different machines/OS or will the individual laptops be prescribed?
  * Who is responsible for ad hoc technical issues with laptops in class? The IT teacher?
  * Will the school have enough wifi ports and bandwidth to manage the additional 1000s of laptops demanding access? (My last school did not and it made staff tech training impossible: with only 80 staff we could not all access the network at once in the same location).

You need a lab! Hope that helps.

Hello All

Sorry for the off topic post.

My school is looking at getting rid of our computer labs in favour of a school wide student laptop program. I was wondering if anyone else has any experience in this, especially in terms of software compatibility issues and authentication of student SAC tasks. What should we be looking out for? and finally if anyone has any compelling arguments for keeping the labs.

Thanks

Troy Coggins
