[Year 12 SofDev] Combined IT/SD class

An interesting thread this!
I am thinking ....what is the root cause of all this? Is it the myriad of available alternative subjects or is it school policy...or something else? VCAA course content to me seems a big offender in the unit 1/2 stream...hardly enticing content when compared to other subject offerings.
Others thoughts?

Hi Chris,
I had a near identical situation last year IT12 (7 students) and SD34 (11 students). It was either 1 class or neither would run.
It would have been unfair on everyone to run 2 separate courses in the one room. Each student would have got half a teacher at best.
So the only responsible course of action was to run a single course of SD34 justified by the path of least harm . Anything else would have been too damaging.
The “only” harm was that the IT12 (7 students) had to take on SD34 with no prior IT at VCE ( they did have Yr 10 IT which was not really aligned with the SD course).
In any case my top mark was 46 from the Yr 12 group, and my second mark was 43 from the Yr 11 group so there was a happy ending :)
Good luck

Hi
It is still very hard to run combined class in two different subjects. Although there is a little overlap it is not enough with 21 students to deal with IMHO
Maybe you should consider running IT Apps every 2nd year and SD very year.
Offer the IT apps to combined 11&12 class
Good luck

I’m running a combined class this year. I don’t enjoy it but Schoology and Edmodo have been my saviours. I’ve played with Moodle a lot in the past but I find kids much less reluctant to use these two tools. Codecademy.com<http://Codecademy.com> has been a life saver for the programming folio and has left me with a lot of time to spend one on one with the year 12’s on U4O2 while my year 11’s have been helping each other with Javascript.

Subject: [Year 12 SofDev] Combined IT/SD class
Hello everyone,
We didn’t get any U34 IT up and running this year, but I’ve just been “offered” a combined class of IT12 (9 students) and SD34 (12 students) for next year. The alternative is running SD, but no IT12. This would have implications on numbers at U34 for the following year. Does anyone have experience running a combined class? How were they sequenced? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Chris Paragreen
