[Year 12 SofDev] Advice for teaching combined classes (Kent Beveridge)

Cavender, Daryl J Cavender.Daryl.J at edumail.vic.gov.au
Tue Nov 19 22:35:46 EST 2013

I had this combined experience two year ago and it will be repeated in 2014.
My approach was to:
1. Reschedule one the periods for SD to a lunchtime. Thus I had at least some 'quality time' with each group without concerns for the other group. This arrangement was negotiated with the SD students and they seemed to appreciate the sense in doing this. On the other hand it did increase my actual teaching load but it was worth it.
2. I had also made extensive use of a wide range of media and internet resources to complement the program. To facilitate these types of resources I made extensive use of Moodle. I prefer the more systematic and structured framework of Moodle than Google Apps. Moodle also has questionnaire feature that allowed for directing of learning at a distance (i.e. a questionnaire is just like a self-marking test).
3. I have also invested quite a bit of time in producing my own MP4's particularly with regard to programming tasks. Recording software such as Camtasia has been most useful in developing these additional resources and despite my poor production skills and the peculiarities of the presenter the students do appreciate my efforts in this regard.

It does take some effort but with the right students and a truly negotiated classroom things do seem to work out OK.

However, the greatest challenge I found was during the extended assessment tasks. It is most difficult to stifle Year 11 class for such a long time while the Year 12 student are completing extended assessment tasks under examination conditions. I will need to look at the assessment schedule and see if the two program assessment tasks can be aligned. Not ideal but I am struggling for a solution on this.

Well good luck with this Kate. Get in contact with me if you think I would be of any help.

Regards

Daryl Cavender

The only sane advice that I can think of is use a lot of podcasts, screen casts, videos
Flipped classroom stuff

We use google apps but the following can also be done with drop box and other cloud services :
I use a lot of stuff which I store in my google drive which I share with students
There is one folder for 'info' stuff which they only. Have read access
Another folder to which they can write where they share summaries, vocab lists, and other bits such as SRS communal projects etc
They also have their own shared folder on their google drive which they share with me

If you only have four or five of each then you can probably manage with sharing time between them and overlapping with things like PSM, h/w, sw, etc

In sof dev my students use Adrian's book on the iPad - a few purchased paper copy too.

Vera - you have taught sof dev? But Kate, have you?
If not it wi ll be very hard, else give up now? End if

In term 3 get your unit 2 students to do NCSS as their programming component cause that gives you five weeks to focus n teh big sac in sof dev.

I got a different combo...SD & VET IDMT..looking like about 10-11 kids total combined class next year..still waiting for the official load though...
Unit 1/2 is a non event for me here! Although the VET did have a 1/2 strand this year. 2015?

Sounds like an old chestnut again folks...dropping numbers!
Why? Could be a myriad of reasons..no simple single teaching solution as I see it.
Our best bet is to hope we have keen and dedicated kids who are prepared to work hard.
I guess we just do the best we can and help each other with resources where we are able to.
I found youtube and wiki a great help. Google clearly is handy..no denying that one!
Perhaps some of us will be at Swinny for the CS4HS sessions ....catchup then and bounce ideas?
Cya there.
Kent.
