[Year 12 SofDev] App development

Hi David,
Absolutely wonderful to see the range of opportunities you have presented
to your students.
If your problem with parallels is to do with the graphics, we had the same
issue but did get XNA working on MACs using virtual box as the VM and
setting the project properties to use Reach instead of HiDEF to access the
graphics capabilities.
I am sure you can get it to work on parallels either as a dual boot or as a
VM. See
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/shawnhar/archive/2010/07/19/selecting-reach-vs-hidef
.aspx
Let me know if you need any support with that

I have run a course this year using HTML5 & javascript to make games.
The kids have loved it, we use code academy http://www.codecademy.com/ to
learn js and a book called, HTML5 Games Development by Example, I have had
to interpret for the kids as it is not written in kid friendly language.
I have used it above others as it is cross platform, having a room of mixed
PCs and Macs can be problematic. XNA won't run properly in parallels as it
can't access the graphics card, so I resorted to this.
Attached my version the first game from the text book.
Definitely interested in the app Inventor, keen to contribute to the course
but won't be there on Saturday.
Cheers
David

This is an outstanding idea. We have all year 10 /11 students with iPads
this year, but are asking students to BYOD after that. My thought was to
develop a Year 10 games programming course using HTML5, canvas and java
script, probably PHP as well. Having re-read that it is vague, I know.
There are some very funky games out there. The development is platform
independent, (maybe use Dreamweaver??) so our mostly PC labs can be used, or
the one Mac lab we have, or whatever the students bring themselves. Testing
and deployment can be done on anything as long as they have a browser to
test it on.
The limitations of having to use macs to program for iOS have put me off
programming "apps". Is anyone else concerned about access?
