[Year 12 SofDev] Physical Layer and Relevance

Thanks for your clarifications and comments Kevork.
I must admit I am struggling here. My IT training and experience
is centred around database application design and development.
I have looked at several books and hunted around the internet
and I do not get a clear picture, except the wiki source seems to
be quite clear about what it states. This is what I have taught my
students. The issues of error correction and detection seem
relevant to an understanding and the bit on pulse shaping seems to be
relevant in terms of integrity of adjacent channels etc.
So, can we have some clarification from the panel about
precisely what is expected to be known about the physical layer
and to what level. Also some clarification about the relevance
issue previously discussed would be good.

Hi,
Here is my reflection;
The physical layer involves sending data. A DOS attack involves the use
of IP, but the attack is to overwhelm the physical layer with masses of
binary transmissions. I believe that this is where the link exist. The
attack starts at the physical layer but uses data link and the network
layer to do its nasty work.

Sorry for the delay ... busy teaching the OSI model in Cisco ....
The KK : purposes and functions of the physical layer (Layer 1) of the
OSI and the relationship of the physical layer to the Transmission
Control Protocol/Internet Protocol model
is still unclear to me. The OSI physical (layer 1) layer's relationship
with the TCP/IP protocol model ( read as Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol Protocol ) is as much a mystery to me as it
seems to be to everyone else.
In Cisco CCNA we do mostly the OSI model and only a little of the
TCP/IP model. I have found your references to the lowest layer of the
TCP/IP model (network access ) only handling layer 2 equivalent of the
OSI which would only deepen the mystery (see

)
I am wondering if the word model at the end of the KK statement had a
different purpose than the 4 layer TCP/IP model. Perhaps the intention
was to relate the physical layer of the OSI to the role of TCP ( layer 4
) and IP ( layer 3 ) layers still within the OSI model. Even then, I am
not sure there is a relationship between layer 1 and layers 3 and 4. The
layered model allows development and accelerates evolution, as the
fabulous slide show by John Bellavance outlines. Mark's slide show is
also very helpful in understanding the layers.
So, all in all I am in the same boat as you Russell.

Having read around a bit, I was under the impression that the TCP/IP did
not address the physical layer (as in pulse shaping, line voltages etc)
at all, and that it assumed the physical infrastructure was in place
ready to do the bidding of the TCP/IP protocol. My understanding is that
the TCP/IP ends at the Data link MAC protocols - or am I up the creek.
As usual, the VCAA has left it up the teaching staff to define the
course by consensus.
I assume Kevork has a definitive view????

For quite some time now I've been avoiding this KK because I'd rather
clean a dead dog's ears than spend time on the OSI.
But in the end I had to find the cotton buds and get stuck in, and I
think I have a reasonable overview of the OSI and how TCP/IP maps to it.

But the second part of KK04 really has me baffled: *the relationship of
the physical layer to the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet

I know that TCP/IP's Network interface layer maps to OSI's physical
layer (and the data link layer), but for the life of me I can't see how
it's any more significant than any of OSI's or TCP/IP's other layers.
Can someone suggest why the relationship between the OSI physical layer
and TCP/IP is so significant?
Has this relationship been in the papers? Has this physical
relationship resulted in offspring?
Is Mr OSI going to be on Oprah... or the Jerry Springer show?

Master? Hardly. I am paddling in the wading pool of technical knowledge
compared to many people in this fine community.
The reason I don't have trouble dumbing-down IT technicalities for kids is
because I don't actually know much about the technicalities myself. :-)
In a way that's good, because I have trouble avoiding going overboard when
teaching topics I do know a lot about about. I'd start teaching how to use
apostrophes and end up lecturing about the history of apostrophes during the
English reformation.
