Subject: RE: [Year 12 SofDev] Design of User Interface
In the study design it talks about characteristics of high-quality user
interface, under key knowledge in the DEVELOPMENT phase of the SDLC and
not in the design phase. If the SD is the bible, then the implication is
that the correct answer would have to be the DEVELOPMENT phase of the
SDLC. I also agree that if we are talking about Stages Of Software
Development then the user interface would be developed in the Design
phase of this "cycle". I agree that it makes sense to me that it should
be in the design phase of the SDLC as well as the design phase of the
Stages of SD, but what I think doesn't count at this time-only at review
time.
The only concern that I would have about this is what the markers will
do at the end of the year. Will they accept both as there seems to be
some difference of opinion between teachers of the subject or will they
only accept the one answer-what the study design states.

Yes - agree. But the question is talking about the SDLC (which is
looking at the whole system) and we are thinking purely about the
software (which is developed in the development phase of the SDLC). OK
- I'll be quiet now! J

Well, my industry experience was that designs had to be produced and
signed off by users before budget was released for development work to
start. That included interfaces, very definitely; they were picky about
how they would look and what functionality they would have!
I still think it is in the Design stage!

Actually on second thoughts I can see why Development is the suggested
answer. It is during the development phase that the software
development itself takes place - and the Design phase is really about
selecting hardware, software and determining features of the system
rather than getting stuck into details such as UI's. The design phase
might determine that a software package needs to be created and have
certain requirements - and some designs might be created which represent
what the UI should ideally look like. But it is a lot like a concept
sketch of a new house versus a detailed plan of what each of the rooms
will look like.
I change my vote!

Adrian

Hi Quentin,
The key word would seem to be 'designing' so in this respect 'Design'
would be the most correct response.

Hi All,
Question 2 of Section B of VITTA sample exam 3, 2007, (whew!) asks what
stage if the SDLC designing the user interface takes place. The
supplied answer is Development. Can someone please help me explain to
my students why it does not happen during the design stage?
Thanks!!
