Thanks for replies - David also.
So the issue to me is the SD's use of the word 'utility'
Are compilers and interpreters examples of utilities? I have never
thought of them as such.
I can certainly see that specialised editors for working with php etc
could be classified as a utility.
But all of the other stuff mentioned - debuggers, breakpoints,
debuggers, linkers, loaders - are usually part of the functionality of
today's programming environments. On that basis, I don't think of them
as a utility.
What I have got out of this is that our students need to be able to name
and describe the funtions of these integrated functions, regardless of
what we call them.
Thanks. Frank

Hi Frank,
In terms of the SAC itself - base your criteria on the key skills. The
key knowledge is broader than what needs to be internally assessed - but
as you have stated, students need to be familiar with the key knowledge
for the exam.
As for "applications and purposes of utilities in a programming
environment", my understanding of this is that is refers to the various
tools that you use when programming such as editors, debuggers,
compilers, interpreters etc. - as opposed to linkers and loaders (which
I will not be covering). As you have pointed out, these 'utilities' are
in fact integrated into most good programming languages GUI's nowadays -
but students still need to be aware of them and what purpose/s they
have.
Hope this helps!
PS: I will be posting my U4O1 to the list soon as well as my assessment
criteria sheet - will these be of help?

Folks - I didn't get any replies to this question. It is something we
could be examined about, but I honestly don't know what it is on
about......
I could not find it specifically treated in the Janson text. Allan
Barnes' text talks about linkers and loaders, which I don't think are
relevant in today's programming environment, but I could be wrong. Any
insights would be appreciated.

Subject: U4O1 question
Folks - one of the key knowledge points in U4O1 is "applications and
purposes of utilities in a programming environment".
I haven't done any serious programming for 15 years, and honestly
wouldn't know of any utilities currently used for this purpose. Linkers,
loaders and editors (utilities of the distant past) are all integrated
these days. Any suggestions?
Frank
