Hi Sonia,

In regards to the content of the study design. In the past even in Informati=
on Systems there were components of knowledge that I considered to be revisi=
on for students and as such taught it that way. What is in the study design=
is not always new knowledge, but a reinforcement of prior knowledge that is=
particularly relevant to the topic area. I'd be just ensuring that the stud=
ents are competent in their knowledge of those points.

As to what is specifically being asked of students in the points you've iden=
tified.

- Functions and characteristics of hardware and software components, includi=
ng security devices available to protect data and information.

This is a revision of computer architecture. You just need to make sure that=
the students know the difference between a function and a characteristic (f=
rom the glossary in the study design) and can readily identify the functions=
and characteristics of key pieces of hardware and software. E.g. Servers an=
d other networking hardware, NOS, applications etc. Also make sure that you=
focus on hardware and software security devices.

- Principles of hardware operation essential to the development of software=
 modules.

This point is making sure that students understand the mechanics in the way=
that hardware functions so that they are able to appropriately develop soft=
ware modules. Things like understanding how input devices work so that the s=
oftware module takes into account appropriate data input technologies, or kn=
owing what graphics cards support different graphics levels for a GUI, or wh=
ether the networking connections can support the data transmission requireme=
nts of the software? They main point I think with this knowledge point, is t=
o be aware of the impact hardware can have on software development.

I hope that this helps in some way.

Cheers,

Two key knowledge bullet points in Unit 3 Software Development talk about ha=
rdware/software components as outlined below.

- Functions and characteristics of hardware and software components, includi=
ng security devices available to protect data and information.
- Principles of hardware operation essential to the development of software=
 modules.

I'm unsure of what they are really talking about. Is it referring to compute=
r architecture (the insides and workings of a computer)?? Or is it referring=
more towards high level IPO?? I would have thought computer architecture is=
 covered in Year 11.
