Hi Karen,
The R61, like most other laptops, can contain different wireless
chipsets, even in the one model release. The website list 3 different
drivers, so there is a possibility that your card is not supported.
HOWEVER, you say you have been using Ubuntu for 12 months. I would
suggest that you make sure that you update to the latest stable
edition (perhaps wait a couple of weeks for 9.10) and then see how you
go. Ubuntu has the ability to install many proprietary drivers for
various hardware now, as well as use Windows drivers through the
MadWifi module, and perhaps this will solve it for you.
My first recommendation would be to try to find out what wireless card
you have. In a terminal type the command lspci and see what you can
find. You may then be able to google your card type and ubuntu and
find a guide on how to install it (provided the above automatic
solution doesn't work)
