How about a few more details?  Which version of Ubuntu are you trying
to install and use?  8.10 is the latest.
Second, can you provide any details on the make and model of the
notebook computer?
Lastly, what can you tell us about the USB broadband modem?

I am not an expert but I have been using Ubuntu on the desktop since
version 5, or about three years.
