[Moodle] Moodle server thrashing

I've had some nervous moments with my latest upgrade to Moodle running on an
up-to-date Ubuntu Hardy (8.04 LTS) server. The disk has been thrashing under
load and my students have been getting Database configuration error
messages. My apache2/access logs are reporting "ADODB error: too many
connections". I haven't seen this behavior before and don't know where to
start. Any ideas?
