[Moodle] usernames in potential users

This would be good.
When I have time, I am going to investigate enrolment by database.
This is used by uni's using moodle, and allows them to have moodle enrolments as just a few tables in a larger linked mysql database
containing all student data.
I just want to get hold of an interface that teachers (or admins) can use that manages the process.

The self enrolment plus teacher enrolment is a pain.
I have turned off self enrolment because the guest account can enrol and thus provide open acess to content on the internet (I wish
I could turn this off).

Easiest option is for teachers to tell students the enrolment code.....

I need to find a hack to include usernames in the potential users in assign students. Emails and surnames are time consuming to say
the least when you want to enroll a whole year level for 200 students. We use a username such as bloogjo.y10 (y10 being the year
level). Im sure other schools must have the same issue when enrolling a whole year group.
