[Year 12 IT Apps] VCEIT.com - IT or Computing?

Hi Mark & others
I'm happy the name's changing. Just got confused when my VCE teacher in charge said he had everyone's results and dates bar ITA.
I of course re-sent my results thinking ITA was me, when of course (and you would well realise this most on this list, it was ITALIAN)
I'm not sure what class CMPA clashes with.
DT - which I gather is the acronym Digital Technologies - will clash immediately with Design and Technologies. Not sure if that's been even thought through by the framers of the AusCurric.
I'm personally unsure about the name Digital Technologies for a subject. If we go down that path we might as well call the new subject Binary Technologies. Or is it a stream of biology: "Finger Tech - learning how to swipe effectively"!
And as for the owner of the vcecomputing.com domain, well played. Should just put in a redirect to Mark's site and charge him per hit.
LG

Hi Michael. Thanks for the suggestion about the domain name.
I did think of it, but some clever chap (who may be on this list) has already registered and parked vcecomputing.com.
But...
I expect that a name like vceit.com will be able to survive as-is.
My theory is that after a while, once established, even an arbitrary or outmoded name can persist.
After all - who would think that "Google" is a search engine, "Dreamweaver"
is a web editor, or "Facebook" is a social site?
And why do young people casually accept the 3.5" floppy disk as a symbol for saving a file when none of them has ever used one?
And why do we still "hang up" the phone 100 years after the microphone and earpiece were in separate parts?
"Normal" is just what you grew up with.
The semiotics are arbitrary and largely irrelevant.
And "vceit.com" is shorter than "vcecomputing.com". Shorter domain names are more valuable, and easier to type.
One does not change domain names lightly - domain names gain a lot of SEO value from their longevity.
Hmmm. I've just realised that the IT Lecture Notes site began when your current ITA cohort was about 3 years old... shudder.
And on the subject of names...
1. I think kids will still be calling it "IT" for years to come. 2 syllables instead of the 3 in "computing".
2. "Informatics" is even worse at 4 syllables (which - BTW - no-one understands). Paula doesn't like me calling Informatics "ITI" (IT
Informatics) but I do it anyway in informal gatherings, like barbecues and funerals. At least parents then know it's a subject that has *something* to do with IT.
You guys will soon be preparing your 2016 VCE Information Night materials.
Good luck explaining "Informatics" two hundred times. hehehe
Cheers
Mark
