I saw an article some time ago about doing a game design class using Never Winter Nights 2. I did this as a Year 10 unit and it worked brilliantly. NVN2 has its own level editor built in that is quite powerful.
It also enforces that most games actually have a story line and not just run and gun "shoot'em'ups" as well as brining in a strong literacy component.

In relation to Game Design & Development, I would love to start using the Unreal Engine for developing mods and designing levels, however I have no idea where to get started. I remember completing some game design with the Unreal engine at University, however that was a few years back now and I'm not sure what has changed or what is new out there in the market. Has anyone had any experience using the Unreal Engine and could provide some tips with regards to purchasing the software and implementing it at a Year 9 or 10 level.

Hello fellow Listers
Just a quick query is anyone teaching a gaming elective unit at either
yr9 or 10 level?
I have been asked to take a year 10 Gaming unit next year. I have used
game maker with students in the past but only to a basic level.
Is anyone out there using gamemaker or other programs such as unreal or
unity. Wanted to make connections to swap and share ideas and resources.

Hi Frank,
I am using Game Maker for Windows at both 9 and 10 level. Have found
the book "The Game Maker's Apprentice" to be a great resource, there is
also a second book "The Game Maker's Companion". They are available on
the Google Play store, and I was able to source hardcopies through my
library recently. Found the books to be much better than the tutorials
at Yoyo Games. You can email directly at
