[Year 12 IT Apps] U3O1

David
I usually allow one single page (doubles sided - typed or handwritten) of notes to be brought into practical SACS but not tests.
I find that just the preparation of such notes is a good revision technique.
When the SAC extends over more than one session, I collect the notes with any printed work between sessions and the notes make interesting reading!
Some students only include their most difficult concepts in the notes; others try to list everything; some again include the wrong or unnecessary information. This last case gives me cause for thought - where did I go wrong in my teaching? Always a valid question!
With thanks,

Hi Kate,
I generally don't let my students have text books and access to notes as it is not preparing them for the exam. If they know that they can have access to them during the SAC I feel that they are less likely to study in preparation. The first 3 SACs and huge (400 minutes each) and obviously students will have time between sessions to check notes anyway, however the final SAC which I do as a 100 minute test, I will never allow students to have notes in this one as it is good exam prep.

Hi all,
I'm teaching IT Apps for the first time so am a bit unsure about the sac. If they can take in text books, what's the verdict on having internet access to look at things like tutorials on how to do things in Dreamweaver? (I'm aware this could be a stupid question)
Thanks for your help.

Dear George and colleagues
I think it would be appropriate for students to have access to a textbook, class notes, summary notes etc. If students do a practice SAC I would be very hesitant to allow students to bring it into the real SAC, if it is similar to the real one.
Regards
Paula

In the past I have not allowed students to bring their notes into SACs because I was under the impression that this was the rule. But Paula's email seems to change things. I don't disagree with Mark's comments but my email was seeking clarification. What is it that we can allow students to bring into SACs?
Paula's statement, "Schools can determine what students take into their SACs..." is slightly open ended. I am not trying to be nit picking here, I just want to know so that I can do the right thing by my students.
