[Year 12 IT Apps] 2010 VCE Jumpstart programs

We've been doing it for several years. Definitely useful for year 12s as
they get a feel for the new subject and some make changes based on their
experiences- usually when they were initially advised not to do a
subject but insisted on doing it anyway. In IT Apps we include a session
on spreadsheets as it isn't part of the year 11 course and whilst they
don't need it until later in the year, most remember bits of it. As for
doing the work- the results are mixed, but they have all at least
started. Problems occur when students fail to show up and have some
catch up to do at the start of the new year. This is more of an issue
with the next year's year 11s, but numbers do drop off in the 2nd week
for the year 12s also. Most of the time the teacher taking them during
this time is their teacher for the next year, which is a good thing.
Overall I think it is a positive. We'll have 600+ doing it this year-
not just IT of course.

Just a quick informal survey to see ....

a) which schools have a "jumpstart" program for their 2010 VCE IT
classes?
b) whether you feel that they are useful, ie. do the kids start the year
having done the work?
c) what are the strengths of your particular program?
d) what are the weaknesses of your program?
e) any other comments?

thanks!
