I concur with your comments. All relevant action regarding one outcome
was taken by the publisher in January 2007 to rectify the problem.
I would just like to reiterate to teachers that it is ultimately their
responsibility to ensure that the tasks given to students are compliant
with the study design and the VCE administrative handbook. Through the
audit process last year, it was identified that several
commercially-prepared tasks were not completely compliant. In brief,
compliance means that:
* the task allows the outcome to be demonstrated
* the task mode is appropriate, for example, a written report or
a test
* the correct weighting is given, where there is more than one
task for an outcome
* no under assistance is provided (important to provide the
opportunity for students demonstrate the outcome - if too much
assistance is given, then students may be denied this opportunity).
Typically within the IT study design the key skills provide the
foundation for shaping a task. In addition to fulfilling any other
outcome requirement, you need to check that there is adequate
opportunity for students to demonstrate the key skills in the task and
that the task has sufficient scope to discriminate performance between
students.

Hi Kent and Bill (and others!),
As you would appreciate, the Potts author team are all ITA teachers who
have tried to ensure that they wrote the best text possible, based on
the material they had available from the VCAA at the time. There is no
great secret conspiracy :-)
I think that the only real issue VCAA had with the text was that one of
the chapters in the book dealing with U3O2 focuses on a static website,
rather than a prototype website for a virtual team. It was felt that
teachers who were not fully aware of the content of the study design
would then create a full, static website for the Outcome, rather than
what is actually required.
On the Nelson website which has support material for the book (prac
SACs, etc) there is a doc which explains this and reminds teachers of
the emphasis on the prototype for a virtual team. This doc was prepared
early in 2007 by the relevant author after chatting with Paula. Nelson
distributed it at all the PDs and conferences last year as well as the
website.
To my knowledge the actual prac SACs are OK.
So, really, it was more a case of emphasis, rather than inaccuracies in
part of a chapter.
As far as I am aware there were no issues with any other parts of the
book.
I hope this clarifies things and the fact that the text can still be
used with confidence!
Regards,
James

Hi Kent,
Thanks for your input.
I am aware of discussions on the list regarding different opinions of
some of the content in the book and I have taken note of these. However,
considering ITA was in its first year this year, I thought the book was
a pretty fair effort, (and there aren't a lot of alternatives at
different publishers). Perhaps a 'third edition' might be available at
some point, if demand warrants it.
There have been some adjustments needed to materials on the VITTA
Support CD, and revisions to materials that certain contributors to this
list have circulated in good faith. This is a natural evolution as we
all get used to what the 2007+ study design really requires.
If there is official comment from the VCAA about the content or
otherwise of any text, I would be very interested to know what it was -
that way we can deliver the study design content in 2008 more
effectively, whilst still utilising a fundamental reference text.
I know from the VCAA is that we, not the textbook, are responsible for
communicating course content of the study design to students, so
textbooks are always just one avenue of supporting that aim.
I picked up Mark's book from the local school bookstore - I hope you can
find it at your local school book supplier. It's possible that even
someone as knowledgeable and committed as Mark might be considering
updating his book, now that the first year has passed in ITA and we are
all a little wiser.

Hey Bill, apparently, the Potts text has some issues when it comes to
the outcomes, Paula mentioned it to me in our phone chat about my audit.
Not sure exactly, get in touch with Paula and she can inform you of the
details. I think it was the Potts text she mentioned, but I am sure it'd
be nice to be certain.
As for Mark's book, methinks I will have a squizz at that one when I can
find it..what stores stock it if I might be so bold as to ask please..?
(not cash for comment, just informed comment, besides Marks a nice bloke
who deserves a holiday and a beer or 3!)

Hi Kerrie
I use "IT Applications (second Edition)" by Colin Potts, et al
(Cambridge) - has good textbook support at the website as well.
I also use Mark Kelly's "IT Applications - The Leading Edge" series
(Harcourt) as good summary material for later in the year.

Hi
I am a teacher at Trinity College in Colac. I taught IPM for a number of
years. However, it has not run here for a couple of years. We have a
class of IT Applications running next year. I have been given this class
at short notice and quickly need to decide on a text.
I would be grateful if you could give me some ideas on what is available
and hints on what other teachers are using successfully.
With many thanks
Kerrie
