Hi peoples..
Edubuntu wouldnt talk to the other machines we set up! So, installed Kubuntu as a workstation - no probs there, functions fine on its own. Currently just trying to load Ubuntu on the former Edu..machine. Figured if Ubuntu works, it might detect the Kubuntu machine and that would still suit the purpose..ie a network!
Its been both a bit of fun and a bit of a pain too!
At least a bonus was the boys had some fun PINGING and playing with the H/W and trying to make sense of what we have (a switch, and 2 former networked machines). Had a play with the CMOS settings and some other stuff (as you do!) and well, did some hands on trial by error! (lots of error...)
Whats this WUBI you guys keep mentioning?

On the R61 front ... 2.5inch 120GB hard drives are about $50. WD, same as the originals. Ubuntu is free and likes our XP network, VISTA+Office 2007+Expressions Web 2 costs ~$50 through DEECD's deal with Microsoft (and doesn't like our XP network!).
Just a thought.

Perhaps the Notebook program can be a case study on the Exam in November, the students can put together a Gantt chart and charge hmmmmm $150 an hour ??

Just on that Vista image problem, I have been slagging the competence of the technicians who put it together. However today I spoke to someone with some intimate knowledge of the whole system and apparently the techs were given next to no time to prepare the image because of the timeline between the settling of the tender and the supply of notebooks into schools was just unbelievably tight.
Perhaps some of these bureaucrats, overseeing these programs, should do IT Applications and learn something about Project Management, because they certainly want us to shove it down our kids throats. Let's introduce them to Microsoft Project and actually have them plan a feasible timeline to design and implement new systems because I see precious little evidence of competent project planning in much of what the department wheels out!
sorry .... got me on my hobby horse!

I can't replicate the Vista/Markbook problem
on my own Vista installation, but I haven't tried with a department
machine.
The Vista image is appalling and our staff are jacking up, blaming the
technology and rather than its implementation. A shame really because I've
come to like Vista - MS have finally "discovered" a sensible folder
architecture. Oh, wait, Unix has been doing the /users/<name>/<folders>
thingy for about 30+ years; Mac since 1984; OS/2 since 1989 and Linux since
1993! Windows - back to the future!

Had the same problem with vista. You need to change permissions of the
markbook folders so that users have modify rights ...... Thank you who
ever set up the Vista image in the department.

Really sorry if this has been discussed previously but this problem just
appeared for us. Just wondering if anyone else has had problems with
getting markbook to update on Vista machines? Vista users are getting a
"Path Access" error.
Any advice would be much appreciated,
Cheers
