[Year 12 IT Apps] ITA study design query

At the risk of sounding like a wet blanket after the hilarity
1. Being the 'computer guy' in a school when it burns down and takes out all your student computer facilities makes one take disaster planning a little more seriously (BSC 2000)
2. I know of a school that religiously ran backups for every night at midnight using a full rotation system, only to discover that when a backup was needed every tape was blank
3. And on a field trip to Penhalurick's hardware store many moons ago when they were amongst the first to have fully computerised their store's operation, Mr P was so confident in his system that he went over to the power switch board, warned those on check out that 'this was a drill' and pressed a big red button. The whole store went off. 45 seconds later the emergency generator had cut in, and about a minute later all the checkouts were operational again....very impressive!

Hmm, testing the recovery of files from the backup tapes?
Simulating a server shutdown with a electrical failure by power cycling a UPS?
Pushing the red button on a power board to see what happens?

Hi Mark
I think it means defining the disaster recovery strategies themselves (e.g.
backup, etc), then showing a means by how those strategies can be tested ,
ie, simulate a power-loss breakdown for a server and see how long it takes
to recover

Spring is in the air and a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts
of the ITA study design.
ITA Key Knowledge Unit 4 Outcome 2 Dotpoint 5 is "Disaster recovery
strategies, including testing."
I've been wondering how testing can help one recover from disaster.
Sure it can help _prevent_ disaster, but that's not "recovery".
How does testing help after the disaster has struck??
Any ideas?
