Hi David,
Have you tried using 'paste special' and 'paste values' only?
Cheers

Subject: [Year 12 IT Apps] Excel Question

Hi All,

Yes yet another excel question. Is there any way when copying data from a
cell to make it not copy the formula and copy only the value from the
formula? Ie cell a1 has in it =date() or 14/08/2007 when this is copied it
copies the formula =date() so the problem is that if an order is made today
for instance and you want a macro to save the date that the order was made,
then the order will always be made on the current date.

Confused?

Also, is there anyway to make a cell count as an autonumber like in access?

Regards

All

This is a very good question.

We have file .ext turned on. The kids who need to be assured that they have
the correct ext find it useful but most of the others kids have no idea. In
fact most of them (because their machines at home by default have ext turned
off I suspect) delete the ext because they didn't put that 'funny bit at the
end' on so they just don't bother with it when they rename.

We have most of our issues because it's on.

I reckon the most difficult thing to teach in IT is file management.

Bring back windows explorer or even better still Xtree Gold....

A quick question:

Does your school have Windows set up for students to show them the file
extensions, or not? What do you think about the policy?

Ours doesn't show them the extensions. I can see why this may be less

confusing for staff and students with low skill levels, however for the
better students it is probably _more_confusing. At times it's downright
annoying, for example when teaching them HTML and telling them to guess the
extension of an image they wish to include... not to mention explaining to
them why the file they saved from Notepad as

"page1" (.txt) doesn't load up in IE the other "page1" (.htm) does.

Interested to hear what other schools do. While I'm at it, I'm frustrated
by the lack of the right-click menu in windows explorer for students, and
also the blocking of Task Manager--- but I suppose there may be security
reasons for these.
