[Year 12 IT Apps] my 2.98 cents worth..

By definition, a school is a place of learning and thereby hopefully achieving academic or tradebased moving in a forward direction!  That, to me, means it is not a gaming venue or an internet cafe! 
If the students want to do free megavolume downloads or play non-education based games which are not specifically intended for education use during their lunchtime..I say let them do it at HOME! 
Why? in 2 words...Budget Reasons!
I know I could go to the moral high ground of the good and bad programs out there but lets get real here folks..hopefully many parents see a school to be a place for learning (ie MAKE THE GAMES, dont just play them! etc) and not just for 8hrs of babysitting! Our responsibility is therefore to ensure that we encourage our pupils to explore and develop in a positive and perhaps even creative fashion. 
Let them learn yes...but also, let us guide them to maximize their learning time and not to waste it!

Now, can I have my change from the 5 cents please!!

through a phase of increasing diversity (or fragmentation), "core
values" are increasingly hard to find in schools or out of them.
In this haze, the danger is that anything that keeps the little buggers
entertained can pass as education.

(SD)Keep the focus on education. Get students to list all the things
that they find most boring and you will get a significant correlation

a list of civilisations greatest achievements.

backside on a hard chair, in a cold room, in front of a boring older
person who is completely out of touch and trying to keep "education" in
the dark ages by mouthing platitudes. That is not learning! We have

education rarely does that and gaming theory utilises it really well,
might be frustrating for us educators - and for those that want "quality
education" on the cheap - but it does not mean we cannot learn to adapt

afterall that is our jobs IMHO!
(BTW complex game rules are more rapidly learned, than complex things
in education - due to the stimulating emersion environment of the game -

Can you actually demonstrate for us that you are not merely justifying
poor resources and staffing in an ever changing world? Because it sounds
like that from here.
