I reckon we should be encouraging the girls who aren't interested in IT
at all to go to the Go Girls Program. Those who are already switched on
probably don't need to have their horizons broadened as much as others
who may be thinking more narrowly about their career options.
Being the minority gender in a field or industry with such a serious
imbalance has its advantages. It is the industry that is poorer for the
imbalance, not the individual.
IT touches every industry in one way or another these days, so I'd urge
you all to try and actively lobby your schools to send every girl in
years 9-10 along.
Pia Waugh - Vice President of Linux Australia was involved with a
similar event in WA and she was amazed and delighted by the feedback she
got from the girls attending her sessions. Some said they had no idea
tech could be so cool.
