....I maintain that I can supply the level of computers usage students
REALLY need in class from school stock ..
Which is a lot more cost effective for the parents than buying them. In fact
because of the extra insurance / warranty/ interest etc Parents have to pay
... i can buy them $1000 each cheaper...

As the parent of a daughter going to a 'laptop school' and seeing what they
don't do with it, I couldn't agree more.
But having said that

... have graphical calculators actually added anything real to the teaching
of maths...

as with computers in the non-IT classroom, it all depends on how and what
you use them for. Unfortunately, a lot of the new technology being used in
classrooms seems to be about using the technology to churn out product and
not about using the technology to enhance the learning/teaching that's
supposed to be happening in there.
