Hi Gill,
I agree with your comments on 'Interpreter of the Maladies'. I am
looking forward to teaching this text next year.

Agreed. I've tracked down lots of resources online. The Youtube
interviews are good. Also several excellent transcripts of her talking
about the stories. Amazon have material as well.

Jhumpa Lahiri's 'Interpreter of Maladies' is an excellent ESL choice.
Short stories, the collection is not too long, themes of identity, being
different, being torn between two cultures. Beautifully but fairly
simply written. Vocab's not too hard. Lots of potential to talk about
young adult relationships. The structure of the short stories is readily
identifiable - it's easy to find details in the writing to demonstrate
various points of view. What's more there are plenty of reviews and
photos on the net and you can watch Lahiri on YouTube, answering
questions, receiving awards and reading her work.
It's a fantastic ESL text.

Rebecca is not the only one teaching Poe to ESL!
The 2010 list is terrible for ESL -- especially for our large cohort of
Chinese students who do not respond well to texts which contain swearing
or other things they find morally questionable (which automatically
excludes texts like Cosi). Other issues include texts which depend on a
recognition of Australian/European cultural references (such as Bypass
.. which in any case seems to me to lack the depth which will promote
complex responses ) Some other selections from the text list are really
heavy going (both context and vocab) for the ESLs -- Shakespeare???
On the up side there are some excellent web resources for Poe many of
which will aid the ESL student. Once the POe stories are unpacked for
the students, they represent the kinds of stories which bear a
similarity to the oral traditions of many of our students. We agonised
over our list and I read all the texts again in my quest for something
"good". I would be really interested to know what others have chosen for
ESL ... and why.

Yes, the list is really sad for ESL. We are doing:
Maestro
Look Both Ways
The Crucible
Really there are very few things to select from.
There are some really good recordings of Poe stuff on youtube and the
iTunes. It might help to have the kids hear the text read.
Good luck

Yes, the list is really sad for ESL. We are doing:
Maestro
Look Both Ways
The Crucible
Really there are very few things to select from.
There are some really good recordings of Poe stuff on youtube and the
iTunes. It might help to have the kids hear the text read.
Good luck
Greta Caruso

"good". I would be really interested to know what others have chosen for
ESL ... and why.
Gail
