I’m also really concerned. I’ve already delayed my submission date by a week, but may need to push it out further (to the start of Term 4). But I don’t want to push it much later than that as it eats into students’ crucial exam preparation time. Last year, one of the reasons my students performed really poorly in the exam was their ongoing focus on their SAT submission and limited exam prep.
We are also going to have to consider simplifications and modifications to designs.

Hi Dean,

I’m also worried that we have run out of time to complete all components of the SAT. I have some student 3D printing- so have been able to continue their work but others are welding etc so have not been able to at all.

I also understand why the VCAA cannot make changes to the study design at this late stage into unit 4.

I know I can get student to justify modifications to the product in their journal, but that still required a finished full scale product or prototype- even if it is an altered design. I’m not sure all student will get this done with the month missing from the workshop. I know current lock down is such bad timing for us in PD&T as we are all at that construction stage. Anyone with any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Page 12 of the study design says the following:

If appropriate, the finished product in all units may be a high-quality prototype that is constructed to exactly resemble the preferred option (allowing for design modifications where required). The prototype should also attempt to meet all of the evaluation criteria developed from the design brief. In this study, references to product includes prototype. Appropriate substitute materials and processes may be used to create structure, form or finish if the originally specified materials and processes are not available (for example, 3D printing replacing injection moulding or manual cutting of fabric replacing laser cutting). All products must be full scale. Non-functioning electrical systems or other technologies can be simulated to indicate placement and function. Mockups are trial models, process trials or calico toiles that are suitable for development stages only. They can be made to a smaller scale and may not accurately reflect intended materials or finish.

I still have my concerns of applying prac criteria points (6-8) to all students knowing that they are at all different stages of the production process. This is difficult to give a fair and consistent approach to some students who have nearly finished and those who have barely started!

Let’s hope year 12 can at least return ASAP to clear up these variables.

As I understood it, no changes to Unit 4. Nothing related to PD&T from what I found.

Will there be changes to VCE study designs or exams like last year?
As we are now well into the delivery of Unit 4, there will be no changes to the following:

  *   study design or examination content
  *   VCE performance, Languages oral or written examination dates
Applying a fair and consistent approach for all students is paramount to any change we make. As schools and students will be at various stages of Unit 4 delivery, there is no way to make accommodations to study designs or examinations that will be fair and consistent to all students.
Last year we began amendments to Study Designs at the end of Term 1. This year we are now well into Unit 4 teaching. We have no way of knowing which content has been covered already from school to school and from subject to subject, so it is not possible to roll over last year’s changes as it would not be fair to each and every student. We are confident the CED process will ensure all students have the opportunity to be assessed fairly.
