Welcome from the President

Hi all technology teachers,

Welcome to Term 2. As always, it will be a very busy term, with the end of semester and assessment for VCE study designs, report writing and our conference.

DATTA Vic Design Thinking Conference

Our mid-year conference will be held from Friday 20 - Saturday 21 June (please note the change from our usual May date). We're very excited to be holding it at the new Advanced Manufacturing and Design Centre at Swinburne University.

We're very privileged to use their new teaching and workshop rooms, auditorium and their spectacular open area and terrace for our trade display and eating area. The staff at Swinburne University are generously supporting the conference by running exciting new workshop sessions.

At the conference, you'll also be able to watch and support students competing in the "So You Think You Can Design" challenge. Make sure you keep the conference dates earmarked - its always a great professional learning and networking opportunity.

Professional Learning

During Term 2, we will run workshops on VCE PD&T Unit 2 and 4, CREO CAD drawing software and SketchUp Advanced.

Australian Technologies Curriculum update

Work on the Australian Technologies Curriculum continues to progress, though at this stage, it's unsure whether the federal review of the Australian Curriculum will have any significant impact on the technologies area. The VCAA is aiming to publish the AusVELS version of the Technologies area at the start of Term 3.

During Term 2, schools should start to audit their current program against the requirements of the Technologies Curriculum, particularly looking at whether they cover all of the contexts is some way:

*	Food and Fibre Production
*	Food Specialisations
*	Engineering Principles and Systems
*	Materials and Technologies Specialisations

Also, schools should check whether students have opportunities to design and produce:

*	products
*	environments
*	services

There will be introductory and workshops sessions about this at the conference, but you could also contact DATTA Vic if you would like someone to talk to a cluster of schools in your area about preparing for the Australian Technologies Curriculum.

DATTA Vic sustainable design animation launch

At the conference, DATTA Vic will be launching our second sustainable design animation, developed for us by Eco Innovators. It's targeted for upper primary/lower secondary aged students, and raises lots of issues about how products are designed and used.

Remember to go to the <http://www.datta.vic.edu.au/content/sustainability-0> sustainability section of the DATTA Vic website for the previous animation "This is your Life-Cycle", and go to <http://www.thesecretlifeofthings.com> educators section of the The Secret Life of Things website for a huge range of teacher resources.

Thanks to Leyla Acaroglu for her fantastic work on all these resources.

Best wishes,

VCAA Report

AusVELS and the Australian Curriculum

The curriculum for Victorian government and Catholic schools in 2014 is the current AusVELS curriculum, available on the <http://%20http:/ausvels.vcaa.vic.edu.au/> VCAA AusVELS website.

The VCAA advised in the <http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/correspondence/notices/2014/09.aspx> VCAA Notice to Schools No 9 that the second (next) iteration of AusVELS will, subject to approval by the Minister for Education, will be released early in Term 3 this year for school curriculum planning.

This will: "include the full suite of learning areas and general capabilities, incorporating the respective Australian Curriculum as appropriate, once they have been approved by the VCAA Board."

The <http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/foundation10/f10index.aspx#Plan> F-10 curriculum planning and reporting guidelines provides advice for Victorian schools on the expected timeline for implementation of the next phase of the AusVELS incorporating the Australian Curriculum as appropriate.

"It is proposed that curriculum planning at the school level commence in 2014, with initial implementation of new teaching and learning programs to commence from the start of the 2015 school year, with full school curriculum plans and implementation to be in place in all schools from the start of the 2017 school year."(page 19)

Australian Curriculum review

The VCAA is currently reviewing the remaining Australian Curriculum learning areas and general capabilities to determine the extent to which they reflect Victorian priorities and standard. This process will also incorporate any changes to the current curriculum arising from the Commonwealth government’s review of the Australian Curriculum that are endorsed by Ministers for Education through the Standing Committee on School Education and Early Childhood.

While waiting for the next iteration of AusVELS, teachers may wish to refer to the latest version of the Australian Curriculum: Technologies for Years F-10 curriculum on the <http://www.australiancurriculum.edu.au/technologies/rationale-aims/technologies> Australian Curriculum website.

However, the Design and Technologies curriculum is yet to be accepted by the Ministers of Education and this will be delayed until the current Review of the Australian Curriculum has been completed.

The VCAA electronically publishes an <http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/foundation10/curriculum/implementation.aspx#update> AusVELS Update, which provides advice about the implementation of the Australian Curriculum in Victoria, including developments, resources and professional learning opportunities.
