Hi Roger and co - the key about DB tutorials is checking that they are interesting. Lots are very dry and not immediately engaging (obviously depends on if you have self-motivated students).
That's why I went with this last year (note that I get 2 periods of handover and not two weeks, so I needed to immediately get the "troops" self-motivated):
https://www.khanacademy.org/computing/computer-programming/sql
It's a friendly low-key introduction to SQL which in turn helps students to understand key knowledge about the structure of databases. Even if you are using the RDBMS of Microsoft Access, it's not a huge leap for these students to move from SQL commands back to the drag and drop style interface. Especially now that after U2O3 most students have a good understanding of what a form, table, query and report are - and the ability to sort, filter and summarise data quickly using a database.
The key to this is you can monitor student progress and therefore get an understanding of struggle areas before you start the year's study.
I'm also in the process of updating my thought process and solutions for each of the topics covered in a Google Sheets presentation that you are welcome to view. If anyone here wants to contribute to this, contact me off-list (I'm about half done).

I would get them to do as many database tutorials as possible.

Hi all
I have a stand alone Informatics class next year - yeah. Was wondering if any schools do Head start and if so if you can provide me with advise, ideas of what to get the kids with . We have it for two weeks and while Im wanting the kids to get excited I also want to make sure that I keep them enrolled. So if you have any fun ideas etc, please pass them on.
Also wondering if anyone had any samples of this years SATs is it possible to share them as Im still a bit concerned about the SATs
Thanking you
