[Informatics] Notes during U3O1

I have found the same in the Business Management subject that I take.  Those that rely on “cheat sheets” actually do worse than the others.  But I don’t allow text books.

I’m just wondering with the resources that are available and the time allocated (I believe that most people are allowing the 500ish suggested minutes) does this make the task to easy for them?  I know they still need to understand the resources, but 500 minutes is two weeks’ worth of work. Seems like a long time if we allow them extra resources.

Maybe I’m over thinking it as it’s my first time teaching it.  It’s only worth 10% overall.

Just as long as what I’m telling my students is on par with what others are doing.  So at this stage, seems like 2 weeks’ worth of classes and access to text book as a minimum?  Is this what seems to be the common approach?

Hi Scott. I tended to find that students who really *needed* access to lots of resources during a SAC were under-prepared and did less well. Usually they would spend most of their time thrashing through the resources because they didn't even know which resource was relevant.

Kids who knew their stuff didn't need much,if any, external support. They might benefit from an occasional memory-jogger here or there, but they had the deep understanding wouldn't have been found in any reference source.

Correct me if I’m wrong but it seems like most people here are saying they’re happy for students to use whatever resources they can?  That is, text book and then possibly their notes and even Internet access?

I guess I’m used to other subjects where resources are not usually allowed, but how does allowing them access to all the information differentiate between ability?  I would expect that in allowing access to this material that I would get a lot solutions that are going to look very similar.

Just wanting to clarify.  It’s my first time teaching the subject so wanting to make sure that I’m being fair based on what others are doing with their classes.

My lecturer at uni used to say that in the real world if you don’t know how to do something, you find out. You just want to make sure its not your heart surgeon performing a life saving procedure.

Time and place I guess – there’s nothing wrong with learning on the job; it just depends on the constraints of the job.
Learning can never be a problem, especially how you learn; as long as learning is taking place, it’s a good day.

Yes, it is akin to the challenge of learning how to operate a cement mixer during a concrete pour. Thumbing through an unfamiliar instruction manual won’t help.

The Internet and other resources should just be reference material. In the professional world it is expected that workers will Google things.  This, I believe, would be acceptable practice as framing the question and mentally filtering the results is a valuable skill that IT professionals require.

I'm with Mark on this. Open book plus any other resources for practical SACs only. As long as those other resources aren't from other students. I do tell them that they need to be swatted up before any SAC session as they can't afford to be wasting time rummaging through their text book, etc during SAC time.

I believe the answer is that it's the teacher's choice.
I tended to allow access to all resources during practical SACs, but never in tasks testing knowledge of theory.
