[Informatics] Notes during U3O1

My lecturer at uni used to say that in the real world if you don’t know how to do something, you find out. You just want to make sure its not your heart surgeon performing a life saving procedure.

Time and place I guess – there’s nothing wrong with learning on the job; it just depends on the constraints of the job.

Learning can never be a problem, especially how you learn; as long as learning is taking place, it’s a good day.

Yes, it is akin to the challenge of learning how to operate a cement mixer during a concrete pour. Thumbing through an unfamiliar instruction manual won’t help.

PS: Experience is what causes a person to make new mistakes instead of old ones.

I agree and also reminded them that they don’t have time within the SAC to be searching the Internet to learn how to do something as that will impact on the amount of time they have to do the actual SAC work which reflects in their final score. The Internet and other resources should just be reference material. In the past the students who spend lots of time searching up how to do things generally fall well short of the high performance level because they’ve “wasted” their work time and had to rush the work .

In the professional world it is expected that workers will Google things. This, I believe, would be acceptable practice as framing the question and mentally filtering the results is a valuable skill that IT professionals require.

I'm with Mark on this. Open book plus any other resources for practical SACs only. As long as those other resources aren't from other students. I do tell them that they need to be swatted up before any SAC session as they can't afford to be wasting time rummaging through their text book, etc during SAC time.

Cheers,

Michael

Same, I don’t allow any resources during actual SAC and use special network accounts to block any internet access and also usage of any mobile phone( internet).

Thanks

I believe the answer is that it's the teacher's choice.

I tended to allow access to all resources during practical SACs, but never in tasks testing knowledge of theory.

Cheers

Another question if you don't mind? I am sure its been asked before.

Are the students permitted to bring hand written notes or photocopies into U3O1?

How about their books?

I actually think yes but I just wanted to see if it is permitted.
