By Helen Andersen, Paula Christophersen, Robert Timmer-Arends

INTRODUCTION

This free web update for IT @ Work: Information processing and management relates to outcomes 1, 2 and 3 in Unit 3, and outcome 2 in Unit 4, of VCE Information Processing and Management. It consists of a PowerPoint presentation on image manipulation and a Word 97/98 file containing revision questions.

CONTENTS

This update is organised in the following files:

  • Image_compression.ppt (PowerPoint presentation on image manipulation)
  • Revison-02.doc (revision questions).

The update is free to download but needs a password to open (see ‘Password protection’ section below).

PowerPoint presentation on image manipulation

The new study design for Information Technology comes into effect in January 2003. The first two outcomes for Unit 3 of Information Processing and Management are related. In outcome 1, students develop skills with a specific software tool and then call on these skills by solving an information problem for outcome 2.

In achieving the first outcome, students might use, for example, image manipulation software and explore its capabilities. They might then look at the interdependence of this software with hardware components such as digital cameras and scanners. In achieving the second outcome, students might use, for example, the image manipulation software in conjunction with web authoring software to solve an information problem. If this is the case, then students will need to know about JPEG and GIF image file formats – not the technical details perhaps, but certainly the differences in their application and what those differences mean for the web page designer, or the print publisher for that matter.

The PowerPoint presentation provided here uses a photograph and a graphic image to point out the effects the different compression techniques have on the images. It has been constructed using Microsoft PowerPoint 97 on an IBM-compatible computer running MS Windows 95. The slides have comments for the teacher in the notes page view. They make reference to the new edition of IT @ Work.

The presentation was constructed with a view to showing a whole class at once but individual students could view it on their own computer.

Revision questions

There are three revision questions for outcome 3 of Unit 3, and one revision question for outcome 2 of Unit 4.
