[Yr7-10it] 3D printing

Hi all,
My name is Damien Cameron. I am using Google Sketchup with a STL export addin to create 3D printable products with students.
I have a CELL Robox printer and started with this last year.
I have two other Kit built printers but the resolution and software is not as easy to use (but not hard) for about 18 months.

Using Sketchup adding dimensions as you go it's a great starting point to get students to create a Mobile Phone holder. A simple L-bracket that can be personalised!
Things to discuss: Designs, waste, useability etc. Once students see a 3D design get manufactured they start asking some really good questions. 
You can also get into the advantage and disadvantage ie Bridging material clean up etc.

Happy to discuss further. I have even done this with Grade 5/6.
2 issues. Expense and time to print. A competition for best male and female design works.
Happy to discuss further with anyone & send files, tutorials, and links. I'm sure there are many more clever people doing cool things but happy to help for those interested.

I too am interested in this 3D printing in the classroom environment.
Aldi had a printer on sale recently at approx $500....(which I didnt purchase incidentally, but just mentioned it...).

I am taking a look during this year at the 3D printing concept as an option to put it to our leadership for development for 2017 to integrate it into various curriculum studies.

Additionally, it would be a great PD opportunity for me to come do a quick tour of 2 or 3 Melbourne or regional schools or workplaces that use this tech to develop this further plus perhaps discuss how you have integrated this into your curriculum areas effectively.

Any feedback or schools who could offer me a tour/demo would be appreciated. My target would be levels 7-10 kids and perhaps this could spark a VCE interest too???

OK this one may sound silly, but last year I visited a school that 3D printed rocks.

Well, to be more precise they used 3D printer files of stone tools from some museum in the US to print exact copies of these quite rare and culturally significant stone tools

These tools were from some stone-age civilisation and the History class basically had kids hold them and orient them in their hand until "oh...look.. this one fits my hand and makes a flat surface that you could mash wheat with" or "hey, this one fits into my hand and provides a sharp point for cutting meat" etc

The irony of using C21 technology to print prehistoric technology was not lost on most students.
